PAPUA NEW GUINEA’s Uncertain Future

Paul Reinbara

I have been writing and posting articles in the past couple of months about the level of corruption and that the manner in which this is sprawling out of control. This young nation has been through a lot in the past few months since a major project announcement was made. There are opportunities for the country to progress forward and also to fall back on its own demise if the nation's leaders are not willing to stand up for what is right and follow the constitution. Papua New Guinea is now at a crossroad, I have been following news and events leading up to the news announcement made last week and the previous week and I am still looking at our current national leaders as mere puppets and idiots. I have been harshly criticized for pushing the limits in describing our MPs and yet I am not apologizing because everything is not okay, why do we have a rising trend in organized crime and white and blue collar crime in PNG, why is the government not doing much to restore basic services to the rural populace, we have a major disaster waiting to happen with the Highlands Highway, At least every month since October last year, we have had issues along the Highlands Highway, the Prime Minister promised changes and while that was just hot air to cool off the hearts and minds nothing, zero, zilt, nada is happening or has been happening. In my previous post I discussed the failure in the Department of Works and the Planning Department in awarding Government contracts and the stink and rot that is going on in handing out of road maintenance and construction contracts. Works and Transport Minister Don Polye has asked the Government for Billions in the next budget to fix all the national roads but I doubt he and his team of advisors and the senior management of Works and Transport have the capacity and the people at heart to even make this happen. The Government is armless in its approach in the maintenance and management of our roads and bridges because all the PTB (Plant and Transport Branch) in all Provinces in Papua New Guinea are dysfunctional, its all contract based now with the rise of engineering and constructions firms who don't even have the capacity and skills. The trend continues with all the National Functions that are housed in each Provincial Administration, what we have here is a systemic break down in the hierarchy and the delivery of goods and services that trickles or filters down to the grassroots level. We need results and we need it fast, let us not dwell on false hopes and promises that it will happen and have lavish ground breaking ceremonies. I remember my former governor Hami Yawari who was known for his lavish and stylish ground breaking ceremonies in the Southern Highlands when he was governor for a brief period, it was a show to show off his stupidity and how low and dumb he was, as I recall all he did was steal off all the provincial coffers for his own gain and put the provincial finance in tatters. His was of telling the people as it is was just a media event and a ground breaking ceremony without having the actual money/funds to actually finance the project from start to finish. Now we have a two tier system of government that promises results and yet we don't see any.

Moses Maladina's bill termed by many as "sick excuse" is a blatant attack to our checks and balance system. Our Constitution has been attacked by a Lawyer/MP who has wasted the last 8 years in government as a back bencher. While many see that the Ombudsman Commission as a hindrance, I see the Ombudsman's role as a hope to our national sovereignty. When we don't have a watchdog to look out for our leaders we will have problems and I am talking big problems. If we throw away this role to the Public Accounts Committee or any other organization with a fake motive to give leaders the pass to steal money and go unchecked this will throw the country in a state of anarchy. We have the Public Accounts Committee that has nothing and no teeth at all to arrest and put to justice perpetrators of crimes against the State. All we hear is reports, hearing and all the crap that keeps going on, making it a media farce in the first place some 4 years ago when this started out, its been a media circus with the replacement of chairs on a frequent basis. We don't hear of the arrest and recommendations being carried out by the judiciary or the Police. Our Melanesian culture of "bigmanism" is the reason many want to see Maladina's bill through because in our Melanesian culture you have to have respects for our leaders and chiefs from each clan and village. What we have done is mixed up all our cultures and hyped it into the Westminster system of government thus giving the room to shred the constitution if necessary to have this bill pass. Our hope is in the leaders who are in government who have the fear of God to make this right. Think about the future of this country, we are barely developed as a nation yet, we have so many years of progress ahead, what will it make of the youth of tomorrow? we need to make a stand to evil and corruption. This bill has to be killed because if the government passes this amendment we will peel off the good work the Ombudsman Commission has done over the years keeping our leaders at bay. What guarantee is there if Parliament rises to make more amendments to the leadership code? We have been greatly blessed evenly meaning we have a bit of everything. We are the envy of all the countries in the Pacific, we are a powerhouse, we are a sleeping giant, we need leaders who have the people at heart. We don't need corrupt leaders.

I respect all our founding fathers, Sir Julius Chan, Sir Rabbie Namaliu and Paias Wingti, these leaders deserve to be knighted, I pay homage to the Late Bernard Narakobi, he would have deserved a knighthood for the work he has done in penning our constitution. We turn away from people like him and give this to Moi Avei and Puka Temu, this is hilarious and shows how cheap this ceremony has come out year in year out. Maybe you need to be a knight to prop your chances of getting elected, or even work as a "special consultant"" to government issues, who knows. While our award system has to be the wackiest of all in the commonwealth, I'd say this is the cheapest you can get if you want to be part of the Royal household of the British Empire. We have people who hardly serve the nation for year earning CMG, MBE, KBE, and all those that are associated with it. I don't question the award to some of our leaders who have fought hard the tough times in achieving nationhood, I know for a fact that you have to be in a role of influence and associated with the developing and reaching out to the wider community for over 30 years or so to be at least knighted. I try to compare some of our Knights to those that are current in the British Empire and I am stunned that we can reward 1st and 2nd term MPs. This is a laughing matter, we give out so many come the Queens birthday and sad to say it has become cheap its like beetle nut in buai season. We have issues Papua New Guinea, we have a father son combo ruining this country, Somare is tearing this country for his personal gain. If you are not affected, you have to WAKE UP and start opening your eyes and nose and see and smell what is burning. We have a Government so CORRUPT than the previous or any other governments in History, We have in this lifetime seen the rise of a failed state under the watch of an old man who is becoming grumpy and unwise. We have a son who is power hungry, We have a Political Party who many say is "too big to fail" but if you study history you know what happened to PDM, PPP, PNC and Pangu. They too were too big to fall but they did. Papua New Guinea we need to wake up and start fighting of the government takeover of our individual rights to protest and demand answers to all the false flag inquiries like the Moti, Taiwan Scandal, Finance Department and Shipping Industry scandals. We know the real rot behind all of them. Somare you were involved, we know and you know that for sure. You can run and build up what little you have stolen but your pockets are going to be broke because soon you will have 5 million people of Papua New Guinea coming out after you. We know what your take is on the Ramu Nickel Mine, you sold this country to the Chinese so cheaply, we now know what is really going on. How much is MCC paying you to say its okay to flush all the waste and tailing into the sea. You are from the Sepik and should know that people along the coast and I mean any coast of Papua New Guinea depend on the sea for their livelihood, Your greed and ignorance will kill Papua New Guineans, many of them innocent. Resign and save face, bow out gracefully and reverse all your stupid decisions. You may not have long to live but we have a new generation of people who are growing up that are demanding answers, you will be held at bay.

People its time to raise up and face off with corruption, let us think about tomorrow, ask yourself, what have you done to be where you are, question your MP, ask why we are seeing a decline in real tangible development. Why is the cost of living going up and up? why do we have rural to urban drifts? We need to Wake up. We know National Alliance and is now Corruption Alliance, all the alliances of corruption and greed form this party, If you go against the government you need to have enough firepower to fight off this takeover of our resources cheaply by this monster we call government. We need to take back what is rightfully ours. Noken larim Somare na Pruaitch and Polye konim yu, Kirap PNG, wake UP!
