Matane, Speak on the Issues

An Eagle Matis
Rabaul
East New Britain

The silent treatment Governor-General Sir Paulias Matane is adopting in relation to numerous issues of corruption in Government and Parliament speaks a lot for the character of the guy and shows his true colours.
At the end of the day one has to wonder why normal thinking people of this country even bother according people like this demi-god status and an overdose of respect.
I am sure Sir Paulias, just like the majority of our politicians is not deaf, dumb or visually impaired and would therefore be very much aware of the numerous corruption issues being raised in the media daily and on the streets by disgruntled citizens.
For a champion in the fight against corruption to suddenly go quiet makes me wonder whether or not you have lost the plot.
Sir Paulias, look at it this way, never again, never again, never, will you go out publicly and preach about putting an end to corruption in PNG.
You must never again lead the Walk Against Corruption because you know what, you have irreparably compromised yourself bigtime with your silence.
You have let a lot of people down. But you know what Matane, perhaps, just maybe you can still salvage a bit of respect and integrity back from Papua New Guineans if you can matter-of-factly give your positions on the following which you have gone so quiet over.
* The Moti issue
* The Prime Minister not submitting his annual financial returns for the last decade or so.
* Selective and convenient amendments to the Ombudsman Commission Act by the current Government
* Selective and convenient tampering with environment laws by the Government
* The manner in which you were reappointed for a second term
* Arthur Somare being given the Finance and Treasury portfolio
* Findings of the Defence and Finance Inquiries
* Kapris Nanua’s revelation of alleged involvement of Government Ministers and MPs in crime.
Papua New Guineans know what you are made of now and you know what mate, you do not deserve any respect from people like me who held you in such high esteem.
You are now a recognised member of the exclusive “If you can’t beat them, join them” club.
Congratulations, Her Majesty the Queen will be very proud of the way you were reappointed and of your stand against corruption.
For goodness sakes don’t insult our intelligence by saying your Vice Regal position prevented you from talking publicly.
Your silence has undone all the good you did in the past, whatever that may be. Catch my drift?

  1. You seem to have a limited understanding of the role of a Governor General in a Commonwealth country. He cannot make comments or get involved in politics or he would compromise his role. Just as the Queen cannot. When Sir John Kerr tried this and sacked Gough Whitlam there was nearly a civil war in Australia. He now cannot even return to the country as he is held in such disrepute. The Governor General only acts in accordance with constitutional convention and upon the advice of the national Prime Minister.

This is the way it works, so unless you want PNG to become a republic, get over it.

The GG is a figurehead representing the Queen as Head of State. He can have no political role.

  2. Figure head or no figurehead we dont need the position, So it seems he is only following the actions of the Prime Minister, we don’t need him, we don’t need the West Minister System and we don’t need to be in the Commonwealth of Nations, by the actions of the current Parliament particularly that of Somare and Matane who is happy to hitch along, with what the Grand Thief throws at him, they titled themselves to Grand Thiefs sorry I mean Chiefs, despite the high number of knights in this country, we failed to achieve a standard where is meaningful to award the Queens titles, it has become a cheap gimmick where anyone can get the title. Now back to my comments about the Commonwealth and Matane, if you cant use your God given head to make a statement of how we should run this country knowing its rotten with corruption to the core, I suggest you get your self out of the post and let someone with brains run it, you should be ashamed.! nogat sem, you and them all are same power hungry pigs!

  4. Anonymous 1, you are quite wrong. There was no "nearly a civil war" in Australia. The GG can act when there is a civil calamity underway. He has the right of Royal Assent, and while it is rare for it to be used, some GGs around the world have refused to give Royal Assent where it is clear that the proposed legislation is absolutely wrong. The legislators have been told to go back and redraw the legislation.

In the case of John KERR, he was faced with a hostile Senate, and he had no option but to dissolve the Labor government. There was outrage ("Kerrs cur"), but no civil war.

The GG represents all the people, including the baby that was born 5 minutes ago, and not just the government of the day, and I admit that Sir Paulius seems to be reluctant to forcefully speak out on civil matters, and the calamity that is underway.

Walks, kissing babies, hugs and kisses all around, flowers around the neck, opening bridges and visiting the crippled kiddies are wonderful and endearing events, but there is nothing quite like pulling a rampant government into line.

Call me old fashioned, but I think people want open, honest, responsible, responsive, clean and truly representative government.

  5. The Australian GG dissolved the Gough Whitlam government in the 1970's for less of a crisis than what PNG faces with the corrupt Somare government.

That GG showed balls. Paulius Matane is a kitten by comparison.
