MOROBE MINING IN HOT WATER

PNGBLOGS

Bulolo MP Sam Basil went on NBC yesterday to tell the people of Watut River Communities to refrain from signing any statutory declaration of such from Morobe Mining JV and the Morobe Provincial Government until our lawyer’s advices about its future implications as the Mp believes that it may jaepodise future lawsuits from the locals and the District Administration.

Bulolo District JDP&BPC recently passed a K150,000.00 funding to fund a Toxicologist from Australia who have already identified locations for sampling. Mr Basil also urges affected people of Huon Gulf to convince their local MP & Minister for Health Hon. Sasa Zibe or the Governor Hon. Luther Wenge to fund the Huon Gulf section side of the affected river system as it is a very expensive exercise which needs a joint effort from all concerned parties.

His office has not been informed by the MMJV officials about the past method of compensation exercises including the recent compensation payouts and the future implications of the already signed Statutory Declaration which was executed simultaneously during the recent cash payouts. Mr Basil also cautioned the Morobe Provincial Mining Department mining officials not to blindly commit people of Bulolo District and the Huon Gulf District who are already affected by the river system to sign any form of Statutory Declarations without knowing fully its future effects. Any statutory declaration must have clearance from both parties’ legal representatives before executing the processes.

The documents are now in the hands of the lawyers representing the Bulolo District who will advise the Bulolo District JDP&BPC of its future implications, if there are any implications then the law firm (named) has been instructed to file a an order to stop MMJV and the Morobe Provincial Government to carry out the compensation payouts until further clarification is sought from the legal representatives while also seeking the nullification of the already signed documents.

It is believed that the Bulolo District JDP&BPC will have to file for a lawsuit if there are enough evidences collected from the Watut river pollution study and do not want any future legal implications if people are blindly signing statutory declarations today without knowing its future implications, a proper and a just compensation must be carried out with references to the OK Tedi experience.
