"PRIME MINISTER ORDERED MY KIDNAPPING" Noel Anjo

SOUTH PACIFIC POST

NON-GOVERNMENT Organisation activist Noel Anjo yesterday dropped a bombshell, claiming he was “kidnapped” allegedly on orders from the Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare in 2009.

In a press conference yesterday afternoon, flanked by the Member for Vanimo Green Belden Namah, Sam Basil (Bulolo Open) and MP for Anglim South Waghi Open Jamie Maxton Graham,
Anjo told his story about how he was “kidnapped” by persons he claims were plain clothes policemen who dragged him into a car from the Lagatoi Haus in Waigani at about 5pm, on February 16, 2009.

Post-Courier became aware of the allegations early this month and took the matter up with Anjo who confirmed the story.

This newspaper had tried to speak to Sir Michael and his office advised on two occasions that Sir Michael would give the interview but the appointments did not materialise.

Two weeks ago, Betha Somare, his daughter responded and denied the allegations, saying the PM was not in a position to comment since he has not been served with any court documents.
Ms Somare said the Somare family would vigorously defend themselves, adding Sir Michael’s legal team would respond to Anjo’s allegations.

According documents obtained by the Post Courier, Anjo filed a Section 5 notice on August 7, 2009 with the Attorney General’s office claiming K1.5 million in compensation from the State for malicious prosecution, loss of personal liberty, breach of his constitutional rights and assault.

Mr Anjo alleged that on February 16, 2009, he was taken to Mirigini House, the official residence of the PM where he alleged Sir Michael and wife Lady Veronica had turns in punching him.
Mr Anjo alleged he heard Sir Michael scolding his kidnappers and saying ‘why did you bring him to me when you could have easily penetrated a bullet through his head and dumped him somewhere”.

Mr Anjo alleged he was introduced to Sir Michael’s younger brother Paul Somare (a policeman) as the complainant when he was taken to the carpark at the Gordons police station before taking him to Sir Michael’s residence.

“It was there that the duty officers at the Gordons Police Station came out to my rescue. The policemen there after seeing the movement of kidnappers became suspicious and came up and questioned their motives in keeping me in the vehicle at the carpark when they could have taken me into the station for questioning,” Mr Anjo said.
Separate statements were compiled by the Police, a medical doctor and eyewitnesses to support Mr Anjo‘s claim against the State. Copies were also obtained by the Post Courier.

Police in their statement alleged that they were also attacked at the Mirigini House by Sir Michael’s wantoks when they tried to stop the Grand Chief from bashing the NGO activist.

The police claim they were ordered to charge him for threatening to kill the PM at Gordons police station but later changed the charge to spreading false information against the PM after he was taken to Boroko Police Station. The charge was in relation to the campaigns Anjo was conducting

He appeared at the Boroko District Court on the 25th of May 2009, and his case was struck out due to insufficient evidence.
Mr Anjo is from Birip village in Central Wabag, Enga and Chairman of NGO and Civil Society Coalition Partners.
