‘Leaders corrupt’

SOUTH PACIFIC POST

MANY political leaders are corrupt and they are hypocrites, according to a Catholic Church Bishop. And a Lutheran Church Bishop described politicians as “frogs” jumping around in the Waigani swamp.

However Acting Prime Minister Mr Sam Abal told Post-Courier last night that not all leaders were corrupt and “we are working on improving things”.
He said church and political leaders were entitled to their views … “this is a free country, they can make their comments, But I can say we are looking forward to make improvements”.

The hard-working and devout 4 Square Leader whose humble character elevated him to the top seat in government countered last night: “Not all of us are corrupt.”
He admitted there had been some mistakes and failures, but overall, there is “many many more” positive achievements by the government and it was unfair to judge the government only on its mistakes.

Mr Abal, the Wabag MP, will be Acting PM again starting Monday when PM Sir Michael Somare returns from Singapore and goes on suspension for 14 days.
The comments on political corruption and hypocrisy were made by the head of 160,000 Christians of the Catholic Archdiocese of Mt Hagen Bishop Douglas Young in a recent interview with this newspaper in Mount Hagen.

He said the problem these days is that politicians have conveniently forgotten to listen to the views of the people and the church. He said as far as the churches were concerned, lack of political leadership is not something new.

“The churches have been saying all along that the biggest problem facing PNG today is lack of political leadership. The problem is that our so-called leaders have conveniently forgotten to listen to the views of the people and the church,” he said.
Speaking to the Post-Courier in a recent interview regarding leadership, Bishop Young said the problem is leaders simply do not practice what they believe and preach. “The biggest challenge facing the church today is the gap between faith and life, between what we say and believe and what we do.

Our churches are full every Sunday. We say that we know Jesus Christ, but look around you! All the social problems that we are facing today: domestic violence, rape, murder, drug addiction, HIV/Aids etc,” Bishop Young said.

“All our political leaders talk about God but many are corrupt. They are hypocrites and don’t practice what they preach. That is our biggest problem; a big social problem for the nation.

People deserve the government they choose. If the leadership is corrupt, the government is corrupt. “Lack of leadership is one of our biggest problems. Our leadership is based on the big man model but the big man cannot save the country. He is only interested in what he can get for himself.

He knows that all he has to do is give K100 or K200 to the small man to keep him quiet.“The biggest mistake we ever made was the legislature taking over the role of administration and the classical example is the slush fund.

Instead of being legislators, the politicians are preoccupied with getting their hands on public funds and spending it wherever they want when this is not their role. This is the first step to dictatorship. The gospel message of Christ about life is servant leadership.”
