Unions to stage nationwide strike

The PNG Maritime and Transport Workers Union with other sister union members who contribute to Nasfund are planning to stage a one day nationwide stop work.
They want to protest against the Nasfund Executive Management and board members for illegally disbursing K125 million to National Capital Limited Kokopo project.
The PNG Maritime and Transport Workers Union president John Mahuk made the announcement in a press statement yesterday.
Mr Mahuk said the exact date of the stop work would be announced soon after a rally to be staged at the Jack Pidik Park.
Mr Mahuk said Acting Prime Minister Sam Abal confirmed on May 19 in a meeting with the union that the transaction was illegal.
“Mr Abal gave us his undertaking to revisit the illegal process and make it legal for the Government to honour this transaction.
“However, there are some legislative changes to be made to a relevant act to protect workers’ savings,” Mr Mahuk said.
He said the PNG Maritime Union in a lunch time meeting on Monday demanded:
  •  THE removal of Nasfund Executive Officers;
  •  THE removal of Board members who supported these investment; and
  •  THE removal of Investment Manager License by the Central Bank.
The union has called on the Central Bank to act swiftly and appoint an interim board and an acting CEO to oversee the normal functions of the fund.
Mr Mahuk said the union members had lost trust and confidence in the executive management.
“The union will be consulting other unions and workers’ organisations in the country to stage a One-Day National Stop Work to demand our current Government to reimburse K125 million as three senior ministers from the government participated in disbursing these funds to Kokopo illegally.
The date and time of the Nationwide Stop Work will be made known to workers around the country when confirmed.
“Our employers will also be notified accordingly,” Mr Mahuk said. He stressed that Nasfund should not mislead contributors and the public on these issues.
“It has been confirmed by the Acting Prime Minister and Treasury Minister during our meeting and on the floor of parliament that NEC/Parliament never approved this loan of K125 million to Kokopo.
“Nasfund cannot sue the State as NEC/Parliament never approved this loan to Kokopo,” Mr Mahuk said.
