WHY DO WE HAVE TO SUFFER? DO WE CHOOSE TO SUFFER?

Every Papua New Guinean needs to start thinking VERY SERIOUSLY about what our country has gone through since the infamous political chaos that has rocked and shattered our very existence has a nation. This might sound some-what hilarious but at the expense of our nominated political leaders tussle for power (my goodness! the way they’ve dealt with it), the nation has become a laughing stock. I don’t have the intention to mention all the events that unfolded again and waste time but would like to touch what we as Papua New Guineans can do to make sure such political debacle does not surface again.

High School social science perfectly defines the word GOVERNMENT as; YOU AND ME, US, THE PEOPLE. So, we are the GOVERNMENT. We are the government because we choose the GOVERNMENT when we vote for individuals to represent us. We say we are voting Mr X or Mr Y to parliament. We bestow powers to individuals so that this individuals can represent us, lead us, make unbiased decisions and provide (development & services) for the people. We do not vote them to enter parliament and join forces with renegade groups (parties) that have the ultimate desire to shoot down one another. Believe it or not, the end result when our leaders are scuffling to be the government of the day , the ordinary civilians, you and me are the ones who will SUFFER the most. And yes! We are suffering.

For us to move forward and catch up with the rest of the developed world, we need to rethink, re-culture, unite and forget the past. We must learn from our past mistakes and concentrate on the future. The recent political turmoil, Political rhetoric, struggle for power and wealth, politicking and greed by our leaders has put PNG so close to unspeakable destruction.

Not a single parliamentary leader has visioned and looked far and beyond into PNGs future enough (Don’t trust the Vision 2050). All have wasted time, resource and have been wondering around aimlessly thinking about themselves and how much more money they can squander for their own benefits. PNG political leaders have sacrificed the future of PNG for personal indulgence of present glory and luxury.
Times are changing. The whole world is shifting into a more complex society yet so easy to live in with everything within arm’s reach and we (PNG) need to keep up with it. These changing times demand invention, innovation, imagination and decisiveness. The first step forward would be much easier if we had a stable government.

Now that we have major projects in the country, like the LNG Gas Projects or even the existing ones; Porgera, Lihir, OK Tedi and Kutubu, wonder how the proceeds from this projects are being managed amidst all these political pandemonium. Political factions have to reconcile and common grounds have to be reached to reach stability ASAP to see the proceeds from this projects translated into tangible benefit for the bulk of Papua New Guineas.

The most important days are just around the corner when our votes will be casted to vote that one individual to represent us and be part of a GOVERNMENT that represents us and knows what the people need to improve their livelihood. So, as the traditional slogan states; “The Power To Choose For The GOOD Or For The BAD Rests In Our Own Hands”
