PNG POLITICIANS PUSHING FOR JOKO CITIZENSHIP

Buying PNG citizenship
TOP Papua New Guinean politicians and businessmen are pushing for a wanted foreign fugitive Joko Tjandra to be granted citizenship in the country.

The PNG Government authorities comprising officials from the National Security Agencies-National Intelligence Organisation (NIO), Police, Foreign Affairs and Immigration are split on the decision to grant this fugitive the certificate to be a PNG citizen. One party has advised against while the other has given the greenlight!

But last Friday the Prime Minister’s office denied outright not having any knowledge of the process and push to have Tjandra granted citizenship in the country.
The PM’s office distanced itself on behalf of Prime Minister Peter O’Neill claiming he was not aware of the issue.

Already, Indonesia is concerned about the issue, but PNG foreign affairs office said they would handle the latter with the Indonesian government in due course. the Attorney-General, the Interpol and Foreign officials from Indonesia are understood to have raised the matter with the PNG office in Jakarta over the fact that one of the 81 wanted persons is now being aided by PNG Politicians and businessmen and a process is now in place to have that wanted man granted citizenship in PNG.

Both authorities are now struggling to come to terms with the PNG Government as they push for this wanted foreign fugitive to be granted citizenship.

PNG officials told the Post- Courier yesterday that they have been battling the issue with their “own bosses” not to allow especially a man wanted by Interpol and a neigbouring country for defrauding a state bank of millions – the fugitive has been on the run for the last four years and is now wanted by the Supreme Court of that country, the Country Disciplinary Forces and the Interpol.

The PNG Government officials have also told the Post-Courier that the issue is very sensitive and because of that they are worried about losing their jobs for defying government orders.

The Government has asked the agencies to fast track the issue of citizenship for this particular person who is one of the 81 wanted persons for the Interpol from his country of origin.

According to information reaching the Post-Courier the fugitive already has a PNG Passport and is alleged to have been flown to Singapore from Port Moresby, under the guise of the PNG heavies.

The man in questions, an alleged tycoon, left his country using a chartered flight to Port Moresby on June 10, 2009, just one day before the Supreme Court in that country, issued a verdict, upon the AGO’s request of review, sentencing him and his colleague to two years’ imprisonment and ordering them to pay about $US54 million as restitution to the state.

PNG and Singapore have been his home since his running.

  1. O'Neill will gobble up money and sell PNG. When concerns are raised he will play good guy. He is a very bad leader. Now is it true he has sacked Namah as his deputy? If so it is welcome but he may have left it a little too late.

  2. Does the constitution allow a person who has not lived in the country for more than 8 years to gain citizenship? If not, it doesn't matter what agencies say, it would be unconstitutional to give this person citizenship.

    1. What if PNG was after a fugitive for the last 4 years and Indonesia was haboring and willing to give citizenship to that fugitive.

Send him back to stand trial where ever that is, the govt should be worried about the 6 million + people of PNG. Dont waste precious time on a dickhead fugitive unless of course if he is a tambu to a govt minister or has handed over wads of cash or is a gay sexual partner then t is understandable and typical as to why PNG politicians are involved, nothing else
