FOUR candidates including Governor Sir Julius Chan have so far nominated to contest the New Ireland Regional Seat.
Sir Julius nominated last Friday under the Peoples Progress Party banner which was witnessed by thousands of people who gathered at the Kavieng District Office.
Armed with a traditional spear and a beautifully decorated headdress, Sir Julius went in to nominate accompanied by former Prime Minister and candidate for the Western Highlands Regional Seat Paias Wingti, PPP Candidate for the Kavieng Open Seat Ben Micah and PPP National President Brown Sinamoi.
Traditional singsing groups from all over the province were also present to entertain the crowd and celebrate Sir Julius’ nomination.
Speeches were made soon after his nomination followed by more traditional dances.
Mr Wingti was also able to close the Council of Elders meeting that was held in Kavieng and attended by 180 elders from around the province.


New Ireland Electoral Manager Edward Konu said the other three candidates who have also nominated to contest the regional seat include former Kavieng Town Mayor Greg Toxie Seth who will be contesting under the NDT party, Aera Epeli Alickson who is an independent candidate and Tomgai Tioti Soka who will be contesting under the Melanesian Liberal Party.
Eight candidates have so far nominated for the Kavieng Open Seat including Martin Aini who will be defending the seat.


Candidates who have nominated include PPP Candidate Ben Micah, MLP candidate Watt Igua, National Alliance candidate Kris Bongare, Melanesian Alliance candidate Pedi Anis and woman candidate Rebecca Beren who will be contesting as an independent.
Former Namatanai MP and PPP candidate Byron Chan nominated on Monday this week which was witnessed by around 5000 people at the Namatanai Electoral Office.


There were singsings, traditional dances and feasting to celebrate Mr Chan’s nomination.
Mr Konu said other candidates who will be vying for the seat include one-time Namatanai MP and Pangu candidate Michael Singan, NA candidate Walter Schnaubelt and Stanley John Wapot, John Saet, Leonard Aduk, Bartley William and John Pelling Towo who will all be contesting as independent candidates.
