HOW THE POLITICIAN YOU VOTED NOW IS DIFFERENT THAN BEFORE. CAN THIS POLITICIAN HEAR THE CRY OF THE DIRTY FINGER VOTER IN THE VILLAGE?

By CHRISTOPHER PAPIALI The 9th Parliament is the improvement of the 8th parliament and I believe the best is yet to come. This is what my view is when I look at the line of members entering parliament. However, I am little naïve on my view. When Sir Michael Somare, Sir Julius Chan and other founding fathers of this great nation entered the House of Assembly, one can recall at that time that the knowledge of the world of politics, religion and economics was minimal. The debates and discussions focused on national development ideals. Since the Self- Government and Pre – Post independence periods, a lot of our politicians were not highly educated which meant that their ability to offer critique to the Australian dominated House was insufficient and lacked concrete understanding of western politics and systems of government. What we see now in 2012 National Elections is a team of elite Papua New Guineans, some educated at the very highest level, some very successful businessmen, some very

Time to think beyond Namah and O'Neill

By JAMES PARAKISSAN Are Peter O'Neil and Belden Namah the best PNG can produce to be Prime Minister? What about the rest? Did they get elected to be National Leaders or to be followers of O'Neil and Namah? The sheeple are currently been brainwashed into thinking that the coalition being put forward by O'Neil is a Government of National Unity to produce Stability. This sounds pretty much like the creation of the Original Somare regime. During the Somare years PNG had an unprecedented 2 terms (10 years) of relative political stability. Political stability was coupled with years of commodity price booms that saw record budget surpluses. What did the people of Papua New Guinea gain from the political stability and increased revenue. Over 10 years over K60 billion was squandered with no improvement in social indicators. Democracy was undermined as debates in Parliament by the opposition, were gagged. The last decade was pretty bad for the people of Papua New Guinea and many want

PAPUA NEW GUINEA WENT INTO the 2012 national election looking for change; looking at fixing the wrongs of the past and bringing much needed reforms into our country. More importantly Papua New Guinea went into the 2012 national election to bring change in the leadership of our country. Leadership that can advocate and champion change. My party, the PNG Party, stands for change. What PNG must see is that same old players are coming back into our political playing field. Many of these politicians are responsible for destroying young leaders in the past. They will only suppress and marginalize the emergence of young and vibrant leaders of our country. The same politicians are also responsible in the downturn of our economy. The same politicians are also responsible for the deteriorating conditions of basic services to our people. This is all due to bad leadership. This battle is not mine. This is the battle for the simple people of this country. In other words, this is Papua New Guinea’s

ISSUES WITHOUT TEARS: LOBBY FOR GARRY JUFFA, BELDON NAMAH, SAM BASSIL, POWES PARKOP

By CHRISTOPHER PAPIALI Let us lobby for some of the leaders highlighted here. Whether they become Prime Minister or ministers is left to them but I think they deserve peoples’ blessing to be involved more directly or indirectly in managing the affairs of this great nation and its people. They are straight shooters whom I believe can ‘clean’ this country in the next 5 years. I have never voted and have not physically dinned with Garry, Beldon, Sam and Powes but they stand tall because they embrace my views on Papua New Guineas political leaders who stand up to speak and perform without submission and dominance by foreign interests. They are true national leaders who can deposit billions of kina back into this country before withdrawing and depositing elsewhere. If what they hold in their hearts can be translated into physical developmental manifestations then why don’t we support these leaders because they represent our silent voices? I believe that we should not talk about developing p

BELDEN NORMAN NAMAH MUST FORM GOVERNMENT

By GRAHAM ROBINSON Indeed Papua New Guinea has a lot to offer to its people with its multi-billion kina projects stemming from its rich soil and hold to this day that government who will create an equal distribution of wealth amongst its citizens with a strong future for all. Over the last ten months Papua New Guinea experienced a change in government with a major policy re-introduced; FREE EDUCATION embraced by the low to middle income earners distributed amongst the rural and urban folk in Papua New Guinea.  Papua New Guinea will see change in the next 5 years; and despite the invisible fence that currently divide our support between two leaders, we must look forward to change. The desire for change in Papua New Guinea has echoed down three and a half generations despite our society’s transformation from primitive isolation to being one of the richest economies in the world. Change in inevitable and will continue to do so but at a cost we are bearing at this time. Looking more close

THE POWER OF INTERNET AND SOCIAL MEDIA: O'NEILL AND MALABAG ARE WINNERS

By CHRISTOPHER PAPIALI Internet is a communication protocol used by people to do business and communicate with other people on a 24 hrs 7 days a week schedule. Through this communication medium the mega benefiters are now Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, MySpace, Tagged, Google +, DevianArt, LiveJournal, and other social networks that continue to revolutionize very effective and fast communication channels. And it was virtually true when we examine how some of our winners of this year’s national election strategized their election campaigns, it was through Internet, print and social media networks. Two individuals, although there may be others, who stood out in this category was Peter O’Neill and his PNC party, and Michael Malabag. O’Neill’s method of marketing and selling himself and his party was his excellent graphical design campaign images with a small growing tree placed in his palms and his well-shaped beard. IN PNG POLITICS, NOBODY WANTS TO BE IN THE OPPOSITION SIDE

Image
By CHRISTOPHER PAPIALI I have asked certain intending candidates and those who have won elections on what they think of the Opposition side of the government. The response I received was “nobody wants to be in the Opposition and even none would want to dare talk about it”. And so this feeling is reeling among newly and re-elect politicians and certainly it is going to change the true definition of parliament debate and composition. It is now a perceived view that one asks: “what is the use sitting on the Opposition bench when I can get nothing out of it”. The decision to choose the Opposition side in PNG parliament is influenced by the horse trading and frivolous enticement by big political parties and certain individuals who have buying power. The role of the Opposition in any parliament has not been understood well by PNG parliamentarians and if this trend continues the purpose of parliament establishment will not become a respectful and meaningful chamber. HURRAY….OLD DOGS WITHOUT TAILS THEN COMES BELDEN NAMAH

B y CHRISTOPHER PAPIALI My old father used to tell me that when you go fetch water down the valley using a bamboo make sure that it does not capsize right at the doorsteps of the house after covering kilometers walking with sweat and pain. This old story can be related to the political development leading up to the formation of the government for the 9th parliament. Peter O’Neill, Sir Julius Chan, Sir Michael T. Somare and Paias Wingti have forged partnership to present to the people of PNG that their new government is for the people, and not themselves. They said it bridges generation gap and yields prosperous future. Peter Ipatas, Don Polye, Beldon Namah, Luther Wenge, Garry Juffa have been left out in the preliminary discussions on the best political party marriages. We have a team of very conservative and right wing advocates verses the very radical and passionate leaders who do not give a second thought on what ought to be done.In all these, one thing is clear:PNG Politics present

9th PARLIAMENT-WHO WILL FORM THE GOVERNMENT?

Image
By NICK LAKI In the lead up to the 2002 elections, PDM was powerful. Nearly all MPs were PDMs. They had so much confident that they would return as they were to form the next government after 2002 elections. They therefore legislated the intergrity bill allowing government to rule for longer term in parliament and therefore done away with 18months term syndrome. Not sure enough, everything turned out against them and the PDM party disintegrated to almost nothing after 2002 election. The so called country's best economist and architecture of many financial and /or state institution and the then PDM leader(Mekere Moruata)decided to change the party name to PNG party just to save it from extinction. However, the founder of PDM- Paias Wingti asked Mekere to sack himself and his comrades from PDM and let PDM alone. So was it done and the rebrand was PNG party just like Polye's rebranding of NA to THE Party. After 2002, NA, unpopular and insignificant party that nobody imagined could

Why is it that there is total silence over the Mount Hagen Open Declaration?

By STEVEN ANDRE I hear Mr William Duma polled 34,585 votes out of 64,073 counted ballot papers. I also gathered that there are still 21 boxes of the primary votes yet to be counted. The Returning Officer was picky in selecting Duma’s base seats with an intention, as it surfaces now, to short-cut the process.  I gather that a situation of recess was created and the counting officials took the break with the intention to continue when the returning officer dropped the bombshell by declaring Duma, purportedly on absolute majority of first count. The formula to attain an absolute majority is the 50% + 1 of the total formal primary count votes. There can NEVER be a calculation of 50%+1 whilst the primary count is still progressing, hence even if there is only one box left and a candidate had reached the absolute majority mark, that one primary box must be exhausted before the calculation is made. The total population for Mount Hagen Open as I hear would be around 90,000 and if that is the f
