And the winners are..... ?????? Scrutinising the Content of The New Unitech Council

By STAFF REPORTERS

The drum rolls are getting louder.  The NEC made its decision yesterday to appoint the new members of Unitech Council.  The question will be whether Peter O'Neill and his uncredible advisors  in the PM's Department and OHE will finally apply a professional process to select the new Unitech Council members, or whether it will be more of the same corruption that has decimated the boards and  councils of so many of our other once fine PNG institutions.

The worst possible result on Friday would be the reappointment of  Peter O'Neill's brata lewas, Philip Stagg and Ralph Saulep.  If that happens, the students of Unitech cannot be blamed if they went on a  rampage, honestly speaking.   Enough is enough of the unending pattern of government deceit and trickery.  The students are fed up and so are growing numbers of urban Papua New Guineans.  Fortunately we suspect that Peter O'Neill has fbeen burned badly enough by previous contact with the Stagg/Saulep acid that he won't  dare touch that bundle again.   More likely Mr O'Neill will look  further.  He may try to put in some of his middle level cronies who he owes favours to.  The other likelihood is that he will be fooled again  by advisors Misty Baloiloi, David Kavanamur, and others in the PM's Department who will apply the old trick of distorted resumes to offer some devils in disguise to put onto the Council.  We can't forget that  the NEC as a whole must approve this council.  Some may have their own candidates in mind.  After all, seats on prestigious boards and councils aren't available every day. They offer a  perfect opportunity  to milk the cow beneath them, as Stagg and Saulep so effectively did with Unitech.

Sad to say, businessmen are the worse perpetrators of milking the cow.   It's probably because their minds constantly turn to the algebraic equation of how to make money, money, money and more money.  Let's
hope the Council ends up having very few of selfish business brains.  Instead of those kinds of losers, students and staff of Unitech deserve to have on their Unitech Council qualified, accomplished  national academics.  The track record must be absent of suspicious doings.  The candidates must have an international outlook on how universities should be run and staffed.  The candidates must have  spent their overseas study or working years seeing more than the walls of their lecture and dormitory rooms, since living and going overseas by itself is no guarantee that a person absorbs fully of an overseas  academic environment.

Some of the best candidates for the Council position may not have a  widely known reputation but be more honest and committed than those with wide recognition.  What we don't want are Council members old
enough to be worried about their retirement and looking for ways to  build up their retirement fund.
Now here is the prediction.  Peter O'Neill will too distracted by the rebellion inside his government to want to monkey around anymore with Unitech.  Instead, he will take the advice of Kavanamur and Baloiloi
who in turn will use their crooked hands to spoil what could have been  clean soup.  There are two likely types of people Kavanamur and Baloiloi will try to sneak onto the Unitech council.

CRONIES:  The cronies would be personal friends of the advisors.  How beautiful it would be for the corrupt ex-VC of Unitech (Misty Baloiloi) if he could get one of his most loyal servants onto the  Unitech Council to keep him informed of what the Council does, and roadblock any attempts at investigating past corruption at Unitech. Their roadblocking efforts would saboutage Schram's efforts to clean  up Unitech by first making it clear that crime does not pay.  Also, Unitech badly needs to recover the millions of kina of money stolen during the Baloiloi administration.

CROOKS:  Any crooks sneaked onto the board would be cronies too, but  maybe political ones rather than friends.  Also, crooks could be nominated by the board not just by Kavanamur and Baloiloi but also NEC members or the Prime Minister himself.  Once on the board, the crooks  would try changing rules to increase sitting allowances, provide vehicle allowance, stay in the most expensive hotel rooms, and claim
reimbursements for almost everything they buy, Crooks on the Council  would also lead the way demanding the resignation of Vice Chancellors who sack their corrupt friends working or teaching at the university.
Crooks appointed to Council will certainly foul its environment with  the stinking odor of corruption.  A fixation on helping out friends and making as much money as possible off the member's Council position
will begin to take hold.  The Unitech Council will become little  different than the "what's in it for me" atmosphere that dominates too many NEC meetings.

Let us now sit back and wait to hear the names of the appointments.  When they are announced, it will be useful for everyone in the PNG Blogs community to join together and carefully analyse each new  Council member, making sure that our analysis gets back quickly to staff and students back at Unitech, as well as to Sir Nagora Bogan (whose integrity has been well established by his performance since  December) .  Remember any wolves appointed to the Unitech Council are certain to come packaged in sheep's clothing.
