WILL THE WONDERFUL PEOPLE OF CHIMBU SAVE THE NATION?

By Kundiawa Blogger

Is it Simbu or is it Chimbu?  Those from up on top put that confusion on us long ago, and most of us have still not learnt the correct answer to the question.  But there is no doubt that the people of this mountainous province rank amongst the hardest working people in the nation.  Starting from memory with Sir Iambakey Okuk and extending to the present, many Simbuans have served our nation with honour.

Now the eyes of the nation are focused directly on the people of Simbu for they have suddenly pushed themselves into the forefront of Parakagate and the Corruption Scandal of Peter O’Neill.    The people of other places in the highlands, including the home province of the Prime Minister himself, are speaking out loud and clear that the continued obstructions to justice and coverup of corruption allegations by the Prime Minister of this country must STOP.   Young people, who see their future destroyed by the mounting national debt to pay off secret kickbacks and other corrupt payoffs, are dominating many of these demonstrations.   Not surprisingly, right there in the forefront are the students of Unitech, now joined by the students of UPNG, in speaking out.  Let us hope they will be as persistent and stubborn as the Unitech students were when Peter O’Neill tried to force them to break up their boycott in March.    It is no wonder that students are getting even more fed up about the state of the nation that us older people.  The money given to education often pays only for classrooms without resources at primary and secondary school level, while university students in our public universities all receive an appalling education because of the same lack of books, lab equipment, and the like.  All because of the hundreds of millions of kina of public funds stolen every year, an education from a PNG school has become something to be laughed at.

But the people of Simbu, now fired up by the political sacking of their respected MP Kerenga Kua as Attorney General, are awakening like a mighty eagle feeling the sun’s first rays.   The humiliation of the sacking of their humble leader Kua without good explanation by the Prime Minister immediately gave the impression that Attorney General Kua had done wrong.  The story got into the world headlines and unfairly muddied the name of the Simbu people.   Simply reinstating MP Kua, as we know our prime ministerial slime bucket will quickly do if put under enough political pressure, not not adequately compensate for the shame Hon Kua has been put through.  And because Hon Kua shows himself to be an honest and honourable man, our slime bucket PM will not be able to quietly buy him off behind the scenes with a big cash payment, as he is prone to do with others.    Adequate compensation for the Simbu people comes out of one clear and simple message:  Peter O’Neill has to go!

The demonstrations recorded in the Post Courier by Simbuans were a delight to read this morning.   Even more heartening is that the people of Simbu are not a group to be messed with.   When they say enough is enough, truly it will be enough!   Their 48 hour ultimatum to the prime minister to step down is something all anti-corruption groups in the country should be echoing.  And the people of Simbu are coming out in numbers, regardless of the police verbal intimidation that such gatherings are illegal.  Doing something illegal carries a badge of honour when you are breaking an unjust law in the name of justice and in support of your country.

Unfortunately, the police intimidation seems to be working in the rest of the country.    Fortunately, it does not seem to be working in Simbu.  Thus, all good Christian, justice loving people in PNG should join together starting now in praying that the Simbu people will not be intimidated into submission but will, in fact, shut down the highlands highway and all provincial businesses until Peter O’Neill steps down.    We must pray to Almighty God that the Simbu people will become an inspiration and a catalyst for the rest of us in PNG to ignore our fear and join in for the sake of stopping the current coverups of truth and justice.   And we must follow our prayers by doing what small actions we can to support the Simbu people in their struggle to see justice done.

May the people of Simbu become the shining light of hope that inspires those of our other provinces to join and bring this government created to an end, once and for all.
As Papua New Guineans from such diverse tribal and environmental backgrounds, we all play the different roles and offer different talents to our country.  Engan students have taken the lead at both Unitech and UPNG in moving very very reluctant SRC governments to speak out for what is right.  The people of Enga normally are not to be messed with either.   Their continued silence of the people within the Engan province is puzzling, but hopefully the fruitful movement in Simbu Province will infect them as well.
The only time evil prevails is when the good people decide to close their eyes and try to ignore it.    We are being led by a satanic Prime Minister who is being meekly followed by his legion of MPs.   May the people of Simbu help break that evil spell.
God bless Papua New Guinea!
