David Arore, One of PNG’s Premiere Ratbags Short On Party Money

All Papua New Guineans, you should know about this man. His name is David Arore. He is a second term MP from Oro (Ijivitari). He is a one-time minister of higher education who in the process became one of PNG’s most celebrated clowns. He is an active partier, alcoholic and womaniser. He funds his vices by stealing our tax money. He escaped being found guilty of corruption by the courts last year (oh please – let’s not have more silly talk that in PNG, being found innocent in court means that you’re actually innocent of what you were accused of!). It doesn’t matter. Everyone who’s decent and knows anything about David Arore knows that he is one of PNG’s biggest pieces of shit.

David Arore stole extensively from the Oro provincial government treasury when he could, then started stealing from the national treasury once he became Minister. He’s far from being as smart as Peter O’Neill and thus has never gotten into the big time money making rackets. In fact, in higher circles of government, David Arore is known as a buffoon, someone whose latest antics always pass quickly along the coconut wireless gossip lines to be shared and laughed about. If you ever hear a chance to hear David try to defend himself, even when he’s sober, it’s worth the entertainment value. His poor English mixes up with pretentious, grandiose talk to the point that you forget that not only does he have a small amount of college education, but was actually a High School teacher. Even when he’s not on television displaying his mixed up speaking skills, David Arore is a pretender, a con man, and a spiv. David Arore is down in the dirt like few aspiring corrupt MPs ever manage to attain.

David Arore is stupid, that much people can agree on. How he gets away with stealing so much money has less to do with his brain cells and mostly comes from his persistence. He doesn’t steal big time but persistently he steals small amounts, here and there. When he was minister, he sent out his small time briefcase carriers to collect small bribes and extortions. When he gets control of any public money purse, he seems to pocket his 10-15% finders fee every time. The sad thing is that in today’s PNG, the amount of money David Arore steals is unimpressive to the top rats even though it would be impressive to those of us who bring home a basic worker’s salary. People don’t even bother to chase him.

Except for Gary Juffa. When the current Oro Province governor uncovered extensive past stealing by Arore from Oro Province funds, he exposed it to the world. Arore doesn’t like exposure. He’s like a cockroach that runs away from any sign of light. Arore has never forgiven Juffa for what he did to expose Arore’s evils. That’s why Arore has been on the warpath against Juffa ever since.

The latest effort by Arore to do away with his arch enemy Juffa was to try and organise a provincial vote of no confidence against Juffa this week, all with the backing of local loggers and SABL permit holders, who stand to lose a great deal of money if Juffa can reign in the massive amounts of corruption and bribery occurring in Oro Province. None of this has any basis in law and Juffa isn’t worried. But like all stories, more questions usually emerge than what was started out with.

The biggest yet unanswered question is why is MP Delilah Gore siding with David Arore in trying to push aside Gary Juffa? Is it because she is, in fact, an airhead and is being completely manipulated by Arore? Or beneath the confused, empty brained facial expression, is there also a bit of deviousness and corruption?

One of the things that does David Arore in most of the time with his own ratpack is his lack of loyalty. Somare appointed him as Minister and Arore turned against Somare to help O’Neill depose Somare as PM. Arore later schemed against O’Neill, a principal reason why O’Neill sacked Arore as Minister earlier this year. Arore’s co-conspirators and fellow thieves are rarely high level white collar professionals, but fellow drinking buddies and party animals.

Keep an eye on this ratbag. Arore is on the move again and its time someone stamps on that cockroach once and for all.

The court ruled that MRDC's appeal was an "abuse of process" and ordered the company to pay costs of the proceedings. MRDC, a unit holder in PBF, had taken legal action against the National Court's decision to dismiss its case, arguing that the court had no jurisdiction to hear the matter. However, the Supreme Court disagreed and held that MRDC's appeal was nothing more than an attempt to interfere with the police's criminal investigative process.
