PM MUST RESIGN - POLYE

Triumph Heritage Empowerment (T.H.E) Party leader and Kandep MP Don Polye today (Sunday) said Prime Minister Peter O’Neill’s continued occupancy of the office of the Prime Minister amidst serious allegations of misconduct is very destructive to the democratic principles and the country’s structures of governance.

Mr Polye said O’Neill is not just an ordinary Parliamentarian but he is the Prime Minister of the country.
“No Prime Minister of this country since independence has gone through such a great length to insulate himself from scrutiny and accountability,” he said.
He added that O’Neill has a criminal warrant of arrest and a leadership tribunal hanging over him now.

“These are not just mere allegations. Respective competent authorities have considered the weight of the evidence and have concluded that there is sufficient evidence to prosecute him. It is, therefore, an advance stage of the prosecution process,” said Polye.

He said O’Neill has demonstrated that he would go to great lengths to subvert the course of justice.
Polye said O'Neill did so successfully with respect to the pending warrant of arrest because he was still in office and used State resources and power to his advantage.

Polye said O’Neill further used heavy-handed tactics to interfere and intimidate all the officers trying to implement the warrant of arrest against him.
“O’Neill has now announced that he would not step aside from office but will continue to hold office until the tribunal orders otherwise. He also indicated that he would use the courts and tribunal to clear his name.

“As a citizen O’Neill may exercise his rights to defend himself all the way but as the Prime Minister, he should own up. Due process and good administration demands that he should step aside and defend himself. The risk of PM O’Neill interfering with the tribunal hearing is very high’’, said a fearful Polye.

According to Polye, there was a further reason for O’Neill to step aside pending the tribunal hearing.
“The leadership tribunal prosecution concerns the procurement of the illegality of UBS loan. At the moment the loan and its repayments are kept off the State’s books because of its illegality. PM O’Neill continued occupancy in the office of the Prime Minister increases the risks of him tampering with evidences and the truth,” said Polye.

He added that it is for O’Neill and the country’s good that he should step down from office pending the leadership tribunal determination, saying Polye hopes that O’Neill realizes the amount of harm he is causing to this country.

The leader of T.H.E party admitted that O’Neill has the majority government and there is no indication that the government would change if he does step down, saying O’Neill could simply appoint another senior MP in his government to hold his position until he clears himself.
Polye warned that O’Neill’s usual rhetoric in branding the work of respectable institutions of government as political motivated has not been backed with any shred of evidence since.
“O’Neill should do the most honorable thing to save the governance structures of this country and stop recklessly attacking them. O’Neill should minimize the destruction he is causing to this country,” said Polye.
