OUR PM MAKES SOME QUICK BUCKS OFF THE UNITECH TRAGEDY:

NIUGINI OUTLOOK

During this week, most SHP students from Unitech made their way up to their homes from Lae using PMV. Actually very many of the students wanted to show their respect to the murdered student Graham Romanong and stand up against his Engan killers. These students remained in Lae at the haus krai just outside of Lae city and are still present.

Two plane loads of privileged SHP students however were able to return to Mendi in style, free of bumpy roads and possible security concerns. They were lown to Mendi on Peter O'Neill's Southwest Air planes on Tuesday and Wednesday (28 and 29 June).

All SHP students would have loved such treatment , we are certain. As we all know, Unitech students were desperate to get off campus following the killing of a student and the burning down of several structures. When Office of Higher Education responded with nothing more than mauswara as usual, Governors of several provinces responded by arranging for airplane tickets home. Apparently the SHP Governor was amongst the extending hands. Or was he? We don't know what Powi's role in Peter O'Neill's latest conflict of interest is.

PETER O'NEILL'S MAKING MONEY FOR HIS PERSONAL BUSINESS OFF A TRAGEDY WOULD BE ILLEGAL IN ANY DEVELOPED COUNTRY

Peter O'Neill is a very very rich man. He could have paid out of his pocket to cover these flights. If he was a bit more greedy, he could have charged the cost of the flights to his Peter O'Neill Charitable Foundation which allows him some kind of tax free status on the 'good deeds' carried out by that Foundation.
Instead he has directed Peter that the costs be charged to the government.
Who were the very privileged SHP students who did not have to take PMvs back home? And who were they who didn't have any interest in staying with the still ongoing haus krai in Lae?
What Peter O'Neill did in using his private company to make money off the government out of the Unitech tragedy is known as a conflict of interest.

CONFLICTS OF INTEREST - A FORM OF CORRUPTION

Few Papua New Guineans know that Conflict of Interest decisions are always considered as being unethical. and often made illegal. Conflicts of interests are strongly avoided in low corruption countries. A Conflict of Interest is when a person, often a public servant of some kind, uses their position or their power to direct money or other wealth towards their personal pocketbook or added to their personal possessions.
In low corruption countries, not only would a public servant not even think about doing such a thing, they would also avoid any suggestion of conflict of interest that their political opponents could leap on and criticise. If Supreme Court Justice Bernard Sakora had lived in Australia, he would not even have considered receiving a K100,000 payment from the very person (in this case, Paul Paraka) whose case he had to make a judicial decision about. In countries that are not banana republics, the good judge would not even have allowed himself to hear a case involving Paul Paraka if he had any personal relationship with Paraka whatsoever.

Unfortunately, we live in a banana republic where conflict of interest decisions are considered small peanuts type of corruption and acceptable.
Our Prime Minister not only sees nothing at all wrong with conflicts of interest but schemes to maximise the rate of return from conflicts of interest. While Judge Sakora at least tried to hide his bribe as a "purchase of a vehicle", Peter O'Neill doesn't even bother.
Why is he not worried about hiding the evidence? The short explanation is that he is a dictator. He has tied up every possible way to legally prosecute him for crimes, and that has involved tying up all the government checks and balance mechanisms that would normally be present in a democracy.
If you see nothing corrupt about that action of Peter O'Neill personally enrichening himself off a personal national tragedy, then you are undoubtedly happy living in one of the world's most corrupt countries, which is now headed by a dictator who feels he can personally enrich himself whenever he wants.
