THE CORRUPT PROTECT EACH OTHER TO STAY IN POWER:

by JOE PEA NAKISI

A year or so ago a very revealing article was published in PNG Blogs that laid out a kind of high level government mafia of past and present PMs who collaborated not in any formal sense, but by shared interests. They all eventually succumbed to temptation due to spineless personal ethics and convictions. Once trapped by their corruption, they protected the corruption of others to keep their own corruption from being exposed. Thus, we have the odd fellows partnership in today's O'Neill government of the PM with former PMs Wingti, Chan and Somare, all schemers and personal wealth builders while they were paid to be public servants.
The lightning fast reaction of Peter O'Neill late yesterday to the UPNG Senate Council's cancellation of the 2016 school year was probably an illustration of this. Chief Propagandist Isaac Lupari may no longer work in the media unit, but he remains deeply involved in spreading the Prime Minister's messages, including his status as taxpayer funded Publisher of PNG Today, the slick and very costly to print Government Propaganda news that is inserted into the Post Courier and The National several times a year.
That the propagandists and the PM reacted so quickly to the closure of UPNG indicates 23things. First, they seem to be genuinely frightened of the possible implications of UPNG's school year closure to their power. Second, confident of their dominance over social media in getting out the messages they want, the news release already has changed the message of the UPNG Senate Council without the Council's permission - from school year cancellation to school year suspension. This manipulative and deceptive change brings us to the third conclusion: that behind the scenes, the O'Neill government is going back again to its original strategy: to strongarm and force UPNG, UOT and UOG to get students back to class, no matter what.
This is the very strategy that Isaac Lupari imposed upon the VCs and Chancellors at a meeting less than 2 weeks ago. In response, UOT put everything in place to get their students back in class. In response, the UOT Engan students, who had foregone demands for compensation for their injured tribal mate in a forum the week before in exchange for a commitment from the UOT SRC that the boycott would continue, saw the deal betrayed when the SRC joined the UOT administration in announcing a return to class. In response, the Engans abandoned the deal and went on their rampage against both parties they saw as betraying the agreed upon compromise.
This falling of a house of cards all traces back to the O'Neill government's strongarm tactics to get students back to class. We beg to ask how the government is going to guarantee the safety of any students who return? Is this not repeating recent history in the worst possible way?
One thing we can be clear on is that the O'Neill government sees the abandonment of school years for PNG's universities as a major threat to maintaining their power through the corrupt PM's being able to remain in office. The looseknit mafia has moved quickly into place. One corrupt protects another corrupt. That means they will all maintain tight lips and will work overtime to protect their power, their secrets, and their proven effective ways of getting rich off their status as taxpayer funded public servants.
Will those fighting against corruption work as many hours and fight as strategically to defeat this mafia?
