THE PANGIAN PYTHON STRIKES AGAIN - NEW PREY POLICE COMMISSIONER

by MICHAEL JOSEPH PASSINGAN

Prime Minister Peter O’Neill is sneaking up behind Gari Baki to stab him in the back and get rid of him as Police Commissioner.

O’Neill believes Baki is mentally unstable and fears he might go on an even worse shooting party than at UPNG.

High-level sources say PM is also trying to distance himself from the shooting of UPNG students last month, which was directed personally by Baki and using his personally controlled rogue elements.

I am advised by highly confidential insiders that the finger of blame for giving the order to shoot at students will be pointed at Baki.

PM’s secret weapon in the police force, Lowa Tambua, has reported to the boss that Baki can no longer be relied on to do what he is told or to keep himself and his men under control.

Tambua is the one who has been given full responsibility for organizing a replacement. He makes most of the strategic decisions for all Commissioners (Kulunga, Geofrey Vaki, and now Baki) and in fact controls who will be the Commissioner and other senior officers.

Tambua is police union president and as such has power over the rank and file on behalf of O’Neill as well. He is a loyal servant from Maeya Village in Pangia and was in charge of security during the formation of Government in Alotau and brought along the rest of the executive of the police association.

No wonder, the Association has been soooooooo quiet since then to date with good financial support from PM.

Tambua is also the wealthiest Policeman in all of PNG with well over K30 to K40 million in Assets.

PM will act on Tambua advise that Raphael Huafolo will be the next Commissioner and he will not take advice from Chief Secretary that former cop Fred Yakasa should win the top post.

PNG High Commissioner to Solomon Island now, Yakasa was approached but told PM’s messengers that he will only become Police Commissioner on the condition that PO is charged properly by police and his case is before the courts.

Otherwise he said he will serve out his term as High Commissioner on Honiara.

Under the new arrangement, David Manning will be one Acting Deputy Commissioner Operations when Huafolo becomes Commissioner.

The approach by Chief Secretary Lupari to get Yakasa in did not go down well with Tambua and police association executives as they recommended Huafolo.

Police Association won and Chief Secretary Lupari was given the snob by Yakasa.
