THE "RESPECT YOUR POLLIE" SICKNESS COMES TO ENGA

NIUGINI OUTLOOK

HERE WE GO AGAIN - THE "RESPECT YOUR POLLIE" SICKNESS COMES TO ENGA, THIS TIME COURTESY OF LOSU LOLAN: We are beginning to think that there is a radical difference between the youth of Enga, whose educational levels overall are much higher than the older generations, and those older generations. The older generations seem to still misunderstand the value of democracy and what is needed to ensure a vibrant democracy. Thus we have Losu Lolan coming out with the challenge that the people of Enga next year re-elect Pita Ipatas unopposed. In other words, turn Enga into a dictatorship.
Just like Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe is always using the word respect, so too does Losu Lolan. He feels it is a proper sign of respect to let Pita Ipatas run unopposed next year.
We assume that Losu would also be the first fellow in line to put Pita Ipatas on his shoulders like some kind of king or idol worship.
The days of kings and queens are over in the world except for the Middle East. Countries that have big problems with corruption with their politicians are the very same countries that do not hold their politicians to strict accountability to play by the law.
The best possible way to hold a politician accountable for their actions is to subject them to a re-election contest now and again, with alternative candidates stepping into the ring.
For Losu Lolan to want to do away with this in the name of respect is, to put it mildly, incredibly foolish. Its goes against what vibrant democracies are all about. Perhaps Mr Lolan doesn't believe in democracy but in monarchy.
With regard to Mr Ipatas specifically, one cannot say that this fellow's governoance is beyond criticism. There is the recurring allegations, again and again, that he has not used the funds ethically put into this Enga Children's funds. That Isaac Lupari would have been in charge of this fund makes eyebrows raise very inquisitively, being that Isaac Lupari is infamous for his prominent mention in the Commission of Inquiry on the Dept. of Finance corruption. In that report, it is strongly reocmmended that Mr Lupari should be prosecuted for colluding with Paul Paraka to embezzle K3.7 million of public funds.
This is that man Pita Ipatas puts in charge of his Foundation? More raised eyebrows, arched higher and higher.
As an aside we should mention that the social media reaction to the election strategy that Peter O'Neill could pursue next year to follow the footsteps of Robert Mugabe and become dictator for life was not met with cries of anger nor of ways to derail the likely O'Neill election process. Instead, there seems to be an amazing amount of resignation that we will have a dictator for the rest of us older people's lives and his name shall be Peter O'Neill.
If the people of PNG have decided to hand in the towel by handing all power over to Peter O'Neill, then at least leet him work a bit harder for the prize and that includes giving his long term ally, Pita Ipatas, a significant challenge. Ipatas was seen over the past 4 years now and again wearing the same "Godless communist Mao Suit" that Peter O'Neill is prone to wear. We wonder if they've always had a Grand Dictatorship in mind where all the leaders get to run unopposed and always win, no matter how many or how few votes they get.
We still have faith in the educated young Engans, especially the students. They showed already during the student boycotts, that at least some of them are fully capable of standing up for what's right, whether or not that goes in opposition with the political kings.

HERE IS THE ARTICLE WITH THE PREPOSTEROUS SUGGESTION THAT THERE NOT BE ANY CANDIDATES TO OPPOSE SIR PITA IPATAS IN THE 2017 ELECTION:
PRESS RELEASE
CALL TO RETAIN SIR PETER IPATAS UNOPPOSED
The people of Enga have been called to consider retaining Enga Governor Sir Peter Ipatas unopposed during next year’s election as a sign of respect for the owing leadership he has provided in the last 19 years.
The latest call was made by well-known leader from the upper Lagaip area Losu Lolan pictured in front of a bumper crowd at
Tukusenda village near Surunki last Thursday.
Mr Lolan said it was fitting for the people of Enga to retain Sir Peter on the governor’s seat unopposed for changing the province that was treated as“a no go zone” to a “valued target” in the country.
Before that, Port Moresby based businessman and a chief from Topak constituency (Tsak valley) Paul Mango and leaders of the Miok tribe (Wapenamanda central) have made similar calls (separately) where customary rituals were performed to acknowledge Sir Peter’s achievements.
Mr Lolan said it was equally a democratic choice by the people to show their satisfaction by allowing him to run the province for another term without challenging him.
“I am not here trying to stop potential people from contesting the governor’s seat.
“What I am proposing is for the people to make a choice on respecting the leader for what he has done for the province with conscience,” he said.
Mr Lolan said no person had ever thought Enga would lead in human resource development by prioritising education to increase enrolment from a mere 10,000 in 1996 to an “alarming 115,000” to date.
“On top of that, who had ever thought we would have more than four tertiary institutions in the province while dominating the workforce in the country.
“It’s only fair that the people of Enga think critically about giving Sir Pete Ipatas what he deserves,” he said.
A retired public servant and local leader in Wapenamanda Mark Reto said he is mobilising leaders in the district to gauge views on whether or not the people in the electorate should retain Sir Peter unopposed next year,
…Enga.
