THE "RESPECT YOUR POLLIE" SICKNESS COMES TO ENGA

Image
NIUGINI OUTLOOK HERE WE GO AGAIN - THE "RESPECT YOUR POLLIE" SICKNESS COMES TO ENGA, THIS TIME COURTESY OF LOSU LOLAN: We are beginning to think that there is a radical difference between the youth of Enga, whose educational levels overall are much higher than the older generations, and those older generations. The older generations seem to still misunderstand the value of democracy and what is needed to ensure a vibrant democracy. Thus we have Losu Lolan coming out with the challenge that the people of Enga next year re-elect Pita Ipatas unopposed. In other words, turn Enga into a dictatorship. Just like Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe is always using the word respect, so too does Losu Lolan. He feels it is a proper sign of respect to let Pita Ipatas run unopposed next year. We assume that Losu would also be the first fellow in line to put Pita Ipatas on his shoulders like some kind of king or idol worship. The days of kings and queens are over in the world except

COMPARING NORTH KOREA AND PAPUA NEW GUINEA

WHAT IS IT ABOUT NORTH KOREA THAT MAKES PEOPLE SAY IT IS SO UNDEVELOPED?  by JACKSON RUNDUWALI Some people are going to have a terrible time trying to figure this out because you always thought that it was the infrastructure itself that was development! Maybe even our Prime Minister has things all screwed up and also things that if he can just build infrastructure all over PNG that PNG will become developed. Not quite the case! We need to explain this carefully so that you will understand. Maybe if you know the Prime Minister, you can sit down with him and teach him too. Firstly is the fact that North Korea hasn't built infrastructure all over the rural areas of its country. It has concentrated the nice infrastructure only in the capital city of Pyongyang. Pyongyang has a population of 2.5 million out of a total of 24.5 million for the country as a whole. That means about 90% of North Koreans aren't seeing much useful infrastructure at all. Just like in PNG, wher

IN A GENUINE DEMOCRACY, THERE IS NO FEAR ON WHAT YOU SAY ABOUT A PUBLIC FIGURE:

by MICHAEL JOSEPH PASSINGAN You can say anything about them, show no respect to them at all, and treat them with personal contempt. You can make fun of them, laugh at them, point fingers at them, and never have a worry in the world that you'll be prosecuted or jailed. That's the way it is in genuine democracies. Who in Australia is ever prosecuted for saying something terrible about the Prime Minister? Or in Germany about the Chancellor? Or in Japan about the Prime Minister? Or in America about the President? Now that we have the new PNG Cybersecurity Act, about which our Prime Minister has come out in print, challenging those who have something critical to say about the government to come out with their names and faces. Very sinister indeed! The idea of the Act seems to be to intimidate people so that they stop making fun of the PM and his government or to reveal the deep darkest secrets about either one, for which there is usually never totally conclusive evidence,

A Student Death Must Finally Bring Attention to the Politically Inspired Mess At Unitech and UPNG To Complete a Fantasy 2016 School Year

Image
by JOE SALAMBI If you are offended by this photo of tragedy of a Unitech 2 nd year business student loss of life, go hide your head in the sand and run away from the problem.  It happened one way or the other because of gross government and administrative incompetence.  A disgusting story Is coming to light despite efforts to hide the details from the public.  The worst smells come from government lies and pressure on university administrators to do what they have now proven incapable of doing.  The police on SOE presence are beginning to show their usual unprofessionalism.   The incident occurred close to campus but outside university boundaries.  Maybe that lets the new Higher Education Minister Francis Marus to escape his pledge and guarantee to the students of their safety if they returned to all university campuses. Obviously this is either murder or is suicide.  Obviously if it is suicide it is because of stress of one sort or another.  Maybe a romantic dispute but

HOW JUDICIAL MOCKERY OF "INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY" HAS MADE THE STATEMENT MEANINGLESS

Image
by JACKSON RUNDUWALI The Jimmy Maladina court case was the nail in the coffin for taking seriously the statement that accused people must be considered "innocent until proven guilty".   The PNG courts themselves have managed to make such a mockery of the statement that it holds no meaning and is more likely to evoke laughter. These days the PNG court system at the district level is hopelessly corrupt, with way too many judges being available for a price or inviting the accused to a "private dinner" to discuss their case.  Unfortunately, the filth extends up to the National Court, and it is National Court judges who are selected to serve on Supreme Court sittings.  What happened in the case of Jimmy Maladina is a clear an example of how our courts serve the rich and powerful as you will ever hope to find. The Commission of Inquiry on the National Provident Fund (NPF) scandal was chaired by retired judge Tos Barnett, a respected member of the judiciary. The

Excellent Tips from Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe To PNG Prime Minister Peter O’Neill To Win The 2017 Elections And Beyond

Image
by MATHEW TOMIO Zimbabwean leader President Robert Mugabe has successfully stayed in power for nearly 36 years and is now 92 years old.   He is widely made fun of inside Zimbabwe for his senility and vanity.   The Zimbabwean economy by 2009 was only half the size of what it was when President Mugabe first took over in 1980.  At that time, Zimbabwe was sub-Saharan Africa’s second richest country after South Africa.  The economy collapsed completely in 2008, with the Zimbabwean dollar losing value that year at a rate of 231 million percent.  Prices sometimes doubled on a daily basis and today Zimbabweans buy everything using foreign currency.  The country has sanctions against it by the European Union and the United States, including a travel ban on Mugabe and his inner circle. Many people rightfully question how does President Mugabe hold onto power?   Much of it is due to what is called in Africa “preponderance of incumbency”.  Only in Zambia (twice) have incumbent leader
