ARE WE BEST DESCRIBED AS SHEEPLE?

NIUGINI OUTLOOK

ARE WE BEST DESCRIBED AS SHEEPLE, AS LEMMINGS, OR AS LOCAL TOURISTS HOPING TO RECORD OUR OWN DEMISE? PNG did have a chance to avoid the economic avalanche that is getting close to breaking apart over our heads. We could have avoided the pending disaster if only we had stood up and joined the students last year in a unified national work walk out.

Why was it that you and we couldn't be bothered? Why is it that the people of other countries, faced with less severe crisis than what we now face in PNG take to the streets? We have a drop in our kina more than 30% which raises the prices of every import and we just sit and read about it. Over in Mexico, they had a 20% increase in just one important product (petrol) and they take to the streets angrily and sometimes violently.

Why is it that we beat our spouses without much thought but won't beat the streets of Moresby in the name of justice? "It's illegal" we say. What? How can we call ourselves a democracy and then accept that the Moresby police won't give permits for any kind of political protest that involves the incompetence of our own government? You can march with West Papua with Powes Parkop in Moresby but you can't march to parliament peacefully to protest the policies of the O'Neill government.

None of that seemed to bother anyone but the students. What you and we essentially did was let the students be captured, be taken to the gallows, watched while the nooses were put around their necks, and then watched the board yanked out from under their feet so that their necks broke as they dropped and their spasms died out until the bodies were motionless.

We let it all happen and now we have the biggest growing economic mess that has probably ever hit PNG. Paias Wingti made quite a mess for the country and so did Bill Skate, but things were stopped in time to keep the messes from becoming national disasters.

The students were trying to keep the O'Neill mess from becoming a disaster but we let them down. They were nationalists. We proved to be traitors.

Certainly we deserve the punishment we will be receiving for our lack of action in stopping the runaway train called Peter O'Neill. But being punished fits right into our normal reactions. We'll say, yes we deserved it, and that will give us the excuse to continue sitting, doing nothing, and watching our country slowly unravel.

Anyone who thinks our country has progressed under Peter O'Neill fails to look at the big picture statistics and where all the money is going.
