SELECTING LEADERS IN NGE 2017

A series of Articles by Sam Koim
Article I: Introductory
I will be publishing a series of articles as part of my contribution towards educating the public to elect reasonably qualified people to the National Parliament in this National General Elections (NGE).
Every citizen has two constitutional rights under section 50 of the Constitution to determine the leadership of our country every 5 years: (1) Right to Vote and (2) Right to stand for public office. If you are dissatisfied with the status quo in your electorate, province or country, you have these two powers to invoke during this period. We all may not be in strategic governmental positions to dictate the development of this country, but we all are given the right and the opportunity to stand for public office and elect those who will be in those strategic positions by exercising our voting franchise. Whilst a minority of the population will be raising their hands up as candidates for the 111 seats in Parliament, the entire population of voting age will be taking part in voting and hence most of the articles will be devoted to educating the voters. These series of articles are aimed at raising the awareness to enable all the citizens to make informed decisions in this NGE.
The success of our nation depends on the quality of leadership we produce and that was the pattern of thinking demonstrated by our founding fathers. The Constitutional Planning Committee Report 1974 accounts their thinking in the following terms:
“The success of a nation, we believe, depends ultimately on its people and their leaders. No amount of careful planning in governmental institutions or scientific disciplines will achieve liberation and fulfilment of the citizens of our country unless the leaders - those who hold official positions of power, authority or influence - have bold vision, work hard and are resolutely dedicated to the service of their people.”
Someone said, “everything rises and falls on leadership”. In my brief lifetime, “I HAVE SEEN TOO MANY POLITICIANS RISING AND FALLING BUT I’M YET TO SEE LEADERS RISING AND STILL STANDING”. Explore with me to identify authentic leaders who, when elected, will stand the test of time. WHO you select is key to WHAT you expect of him/her when elected. This is the opportune time to find your leader.
