Evidence of crook dealings by Rex Paki, a reply to Kusai Mahn

By Dr KRISTIAN LASSLETT International State Crime Initiative (ISCI)  In a recent ISCI report on the demolition of Paga Hill, the prominent businessman Rex Paki received mention. According to Investment Promotion Authority records, he had been intimately involved in the Paga Hill property development during 1997-2000. ISCI queried Paki’s involvement in light of serious allegations laid against him by two Commission of Inquiries, two Public Accounts Committee inquiries, an Auditor General special investigation, and PNG’s Supreme Court. Following the publication of our report, social media commentators noted with concern that Rex Paki has also been appointed to the Papua New Guinea Sustainable Development Program Ltd (PNGSDP) Board of Directors, by PNG’s Treasurer. I have found that this is not the case for some. It appears that rhetoric and clever application of distraction and evasion abound and there are those who now having entered Parliament, appear to be concerned about interests that are not shared by the people. Djoko TJANDRA, an international criminal fugitive wanted by the Supreme Court of INDONESIA for embezzling $US 62 Million and ILLEGALLY in Papua New Guinea, was protected in parliament by several elected members who profusely fought to claim he was a Papua New Guinean and who shied away from their responsibilities by claiming it was not their area of concern. By SUSAN MERRELL Business operations from stolen money, money needed for dire services. Eremas Wartoto was committed to stand trial in the National courts on 2 October - in absentia. The charges were relating to the Kerevat National High School where a company he owned was paid 7.9 million dollars by the state of Papua New Guinea to rehabilitate the school – work that was never carried out. But wait…there's more. Wartoto has outstanding allegations of defrauding the PNG government of 62 million kina according to a press release by Sam Koim of Task Force Sweep.  Koim lists some damning evidence relating to eight separate matters. "Eremas Wartoto is still at large," is Koim's rejoinder and lament. That was in May.   Five months later, Eremas Wartoto, although committed for trial, is still "at large." Mr Speaker, I rise to present my Maiden Speech to the 9th National Parliament of Papua New Guinea. In doing so, let me again congratulate you, Mr Speaker and all Honourable Members, for your successful elections to Parliament. In particular, I salute our three Honourable female Parliamentarians, for showing other women folk in PNG that when you demonstrate genuine passion for people and exceptional leadership abilities, you will get elected. I look forward to working together with these fine women and all honourable gentlemen, to bring about positive and meaningful changes to the lives of our people, through this Parliament. I also take this rare opportunity to thank most sincerely, my people of Vanimo - Green, for returning me to serve another term in this Parliament.
