WARNING! MAHESH PATEL AT THE CENTRE OF TELIKOM 4G GSM MOBILE PRICE FIXING SCANDAL
by PNG CWU
Who says Mahesh Patel will settle down? This Fijian/Indian who
claims to be the best Chairman in the South Pacific is still spinning his wheel
of fortune in the daily operations of Telikom PNG.
His Motive? To grossly devalue Telikom PNG and make it underperform
in the face of competition, take this as a genuine case to NEC and recommend
for TPNG to be made insolvent. Then, float the company in open market, and who
buys it? Mahesh Patel and his cohorts who are closely associated with Peter
O’Neil. They will then shift the gateway from PNG to Fiji, and there goes PNG!
Lately, here is how he planned to do that: On the 18th of April, the Telikom
Management was under pressure from Mahesh Patel
to do a submission for a
Board Meeting to be held
the very next day to approve a price fixture for Telikom 4G mobile in favour of Bemobile and Digicel. The
Management submission contained recommendations for Telikom Board to approve a
cut-off price for Telikom 4G Voice and Internet rates and was approved by
Mahesh Patel and the Board on 19th April, 2017. The submission
contained recommendations, if implemented,
will force Telikom Low end data users to spend as high as K30.00 to buy data
bundles valued at 0.5GBytes and upwards. There will be no more K2 to K29
worth of data bundles. As a result, other mobile operators will offer the lower
end data bundles as they have been doing all this time.
BOARD
RECOMMENDATION #2 READS_ KTH Board agree the following price principles for
TPNG.
1. Pricing
to start at 0.5GBytes and be higher than Bemobile at this point.
Mahesh
Patel gave condition that for Telikom to fully launch its 4G GSM Network &
Services across PNG, the management has to agree to a price fixing scandal as
stated above. Otherwise, TPNG will do a soft launch only. That is the case now.
Telikom
customers will be forced to purchase data bundles commencing from 0.5Gbyte
(500MB) upwards. This automatically forces customers away from Telikom to
either Bemobile or Digicel. There is absolutely no guarantee that they will
migrate to Bemobile, this is something the Chairman has in his mind.
This
is a very bad decision by a Board of an SOE in the face of full competition
which is trying its best to provide affordable services to the people of Papua
New Guinea. ICCC and NICTA should check the board’s decision to see if it has
complied with all Regulatory requirements to suddenly increase the prices of
internet in Papua New Guinea. This is in direct contrast to TPNG’s vision
statement, which states that TPNG shall make communications services accessible
and affordable to all Papua New Guineans by 2050. This is in line with the
National Government’s vision 2050.
This vision statement currently hangs on the walls of the Telikom
Rumana ground floor main entrance. It seems Mahesh Patel needs microscopic
lenses to be able to read and understand simple English, or should that be
written in Fijian/Indian language, then he may understand.
If
the Board is found to be in breach of laws regulating operations of Telikom
& Bemobile in terms of pricing and licencing for the two operators, then,
the full Board should be sacked.
The Telikom PNG
Management, Technical Staff, Engineers, Service Technicians, Customer Services
and Sales staff with the support of the PNG Communications Workers Union
Members across the country are up against the board’s decision and are holding
a series of stop work meetings to put this decision on hold after a new
Government is formed in August this year to review these irresponsible
decisions.
Sources from
within the Board and Executive Management confirmed that this is Mahesh Patel’s
own doing with the support of an overseas based board director Andrew Johnson.
It is now very clear. The
deal is between Mahesh Patel, Andrew
Johnson for Bemobile and John Mangos who still has much say in Digicel Operations in PNG. That is, for Mahesh Patel to
initiate the Price Fixing scandal
and deny Telikom PNG of business and
allow Bemobile and Digicel to benefit in return for personal favours and
monetary gains. This is corporate fraud and PM Mr. O’Neil who is half Australian/PNG needs to seriously
consider the interest of Papua New Guineans and make some bold decisions on the
fate of these three crooks. SACK THEM IMMEDIATELY. Failing that, a new
Government formed in August this
year should immediately DEPORT THESE CROOKS OUT OF PNG.
On
the 14th of June, all staff
and Union Members based in NCD have
unanimously agreed and passed a resolution for Telikom PNG to fully launch its
4G GSM Service Nationwide at the end of June 2017 without the Mahesh Patel
Price Fixing scandal. A letter to this effect has been delivered to the office
of the Acting CEO, Mr. Xavier Victor
to facilitate the launching.
