WILL O’NEILL RESIGN AS PETITIONED?

Image
by ELIZAH PAMA This article analyses PETER O’NEILL’S LIKELY RESPONSE TO THE PETITION presented by the Students at UPNG and it is based on his initial reaction when receiving the petition. The article also contextualises with O’Neill’s entrenched character. The students of Papua New Guinea in major universities and colleges led by UPNG have Thursday presented their petition to Prime Minister Peter O’Neill through his proxy former activist and now governor, Powes Parkop. The presentation was witnessed by more than 15,000 people who congregated at the University of PNG Forum Square well before the arrival of PM O’Neill’s delegates. For reasons only known the O’Neill, he refused to receive the petition from the students himself. The Petition was presented at around 3 pm whereby the Prime Minister was given 24 hours to respond and Governor Parkop promised that he would deliver the petition right away. PNG Loop news reports at 5:16pm the acknowledgement of receipt of the petition by the P

JOHN PASKA LOST TOUCH WITH REALITY OF ECONOMIC MISMANAGEMENT THREATENING THE DEMOCRACY.

Image
by LEKEM LAKI   Is it for real that John Paska is well and life in Moresby? Thought he retired from being a unionist and living in the land of bilas peles. I am surprised but he may well have been sleeping on the steering wheel and forgot all about truck load of workers until students and bystanders on the road yield at him and he woke up to his sense. His stance on gross mismanagement of country’s affairs cutting across every strata of society affecting the normal way of life in this cash driven post-modern society was in complete silence. He is only known to be alive coming out in the print media (post courier dated 10/5/16) chanting “Paska sees boycott as threat to democracy”. Where the hell Paska was all these time? Democracy was under immense threat since Peter O’Neil took over the legitimate government of Chief Sir Michael Somare? People like Paska is the living proof or testament of how corrupt he is condemning the students for a noble act. If you (J.

FOOLISH JUDGEMENT COSTING STATE MUCH NEEDED MONEY

Image
by LEKEM LAKI SHORT SIGHTED WITH NO BENEFIT AND COST ANALYSIS LEADING TO FOOLISH JUDGEMENT COSTING STATE MUCH NEEDED MONEY. I write to express my disgust and disapproval on the controversial judgement by a learned judge who presided over the election petition case between Hon. Don Pomb Polye and Alfred Luke Manase. The judgement is thought provoking, illogical, unmerited and senseless decision in totality. Compare and contrast the statistics courtesy of electoral commission and do a benefit and cost analysis of the episode of recount. Does it warrant such a judgement? Not merely the timing factor but the decision that is of no great benefit to the state at the crucial time when the country is rattled with gross mismanagement of country’s economy and proliferation of massive corruption courtesy of ruthless regime of PO. According to Electoral Commissioner Gamato’s testament, he needs three quarter of a million Kina (K850, 000.00) to do the recounting. In those disputed boxes, the t

UPNG VC IN CORRUPT LAND DEAL WHILE UPNG BURNS,

Image
by UPNG ACADEMIC Court documents registered at the Waigani Court (OS NO.715 of 2015 (JR) reveals a fishy land deal involving the UPNG Vice Chancellor, Mellam, NCD officials, some high ranking government officials and the developer Phoenix Construction Company. The developer is the same company who could not complete the Gerehu roads adequately on time and within budget. What is most absurd about this fishy deal is that it was all reached and settled verbally, though a gentlemen’s agreement. Affidavits submitted by NCD and the company involved plus other documents reveals that Mellam consented to this deal VERBALLY. There is no documentation at the University, either through the Senior Management, the Planning Committee or most importantly the University Council of any university land deal. If due diligence and proper processes were followed, records at the university would have shown the University Council’s decision and university management’s consideration of any submission fr

POLITICAL STABILITY -V- ECONOMIC STABILITY

Image
by SAM KOIM Is Political stability the main driver of investor confidence? I have been led, and I believe many are, to believe that political stability is needed to give investor confidence and growing the economy. This misconception of synonymising political stability to economic stability has it’s seldom appearances in public grandstanding and political discourses. This is what I've discovered in debunking this illusion. Political stability talks about the length of time a government is in power. In terms of investor confidence, it means the investors can count on the current (negotiating) government for durability and certainty of the current position. Yes, in countries and time periods with a high propensity of government collapse (political instability), growth is significantly lower than otherwise but is it really political instability that really caused decline in growth? Economists may articulate it more clearly than I, but I gather that economic s

SO ARORE CLAIMS VOTER RIGHTS ABUSED?

Image
by BRYAN KRAMER Post Courier ran a front page article, "Voter Rights Abused", which quoted Member for Ijiviatri, David Arore's claims that election petitions infringe on the rights of voters and called for an urgent amendment to the law. "It is a serious issue that needs to be addressed in the conduct of elections as per the Organic Law on General Elections," he said. "You talk about the rights of the candidates but what about the rights of the voters. Isn't that abusing and questioning their rights? They should also take the candidates to court for denying their rights to vote a leader of their choice." "..We need to change the laws and I will take it up before Parliament to have these laws amended so we do not have unnecessary courts of disputes and by-elections. Make them tighter so that laws are not abused for the convenience of a few people who want to disrupt service delivery and infringe on the rights of the people. We need to

BREAKING NEWS: NEC APPROVES TO REVERT TO FIRST-PAST-THE-POST VOTING SYSTEM FOR 2017 NATIONAL ELECTIONS

Image
by JACK PALME JOHNSON Prime Minister Peter O’Neill and his heavily corrupt National Executive Council have, on Wednesday 16th December, approved to abolish the Limited Preferential Voting (LPV) System and revert to the old system –First Past the Post. We do not know the reasoning behind this regressive Christmas gift to PNG by the O’Neill Government but well-placed sources confirm the NEC decision. This decision does not come as a surprise to Papua New Guinea, the land of bountiful tolerance and wilful ignorance. It shouldn’t be surprising at all because O’Neill Government has lost its popularity on all fronts. Economic Mismanagement, Grand Scale Corruption, Evasion, Deception, Lies, and Manipulation are among the outstanding hallmarks of PNC Party and O’Neill Administration. PM O’Neill himself has the NPF case, the Paraka Case, the UBS Leadership Tribunal and the PNG Power Generators case still hanging over him and yet continues to run this country down. Thanks to our entire

PAPUA NEW GUINEA FAILS AT WORLD FREEDOM RANKINGS

Image
by FREEDOM HOUSE   The Political Rights rating declined from 3 to 4 due to Prime Minister Peter O’Neill’s increasingly autocratic leadership style, including his disbanding of an anticorruption task force after he became subject of a corruption investigation. Overview:  In January 2014, Prime Minister Peter O’Neill and other lawmakers faced allegations of wrongdoing involving $28 million in government fees paid to a private law firm. Taskforce Sweep, O’Neill’s special anticorruption investigation body, first concluded the allegations were unfounded, but later said new evidence supported an arrest warrant for O’Neill. Following this development, O’Neill declared Taskforce Sweep to be politically compromised and disbanded the group in June, putting the police in charge of the investigation. Acting Police Commissioner Geoffrey Vaki was arrested soon afterward by fraud investigators for interfering with the course of justice in relation to the case against O’Neil

UPNG A PICTURE TELLS A LOT OF STORY

Image
CYRIL GARE A picture tells a lot of story. Likewise I present pictures here to tell about the state of students’ and lecturers’ housing facilities on campus at the University of Papua New Guinea. From the outset let me attest unreservedly that there is no malice or prejudice behind this publication except that the truth must be told.  It’s been over 20 years since I left UPNG and correctly student dormitories including all the Toa blocks (1-6), Talaigu, Poroman, Kapandu, and Niomoru as well as all the girls’ dormitories – Luavi house, Lasitawe and Dame Mary Kekedo building - have succumbed to depreciation and years of general wear and tear. At Toa 5 & 6, stocks of rubbish lie uncollected for weeks if not months, betelnut spittle everywhere. A room has stocks of empty soft drink cans piled up outside, a perfect attraction for Papuan black snakes.  At Fort banner where lecturers live, streets are filthy with rubbish and over grown trees and grass, used shopping plast

WILLIAM POWI'S 5 YEAR MASTER PLAN FOR NOTHING

Image
by PNGBLOGS William Titipe Powi contested for Southern Highlands Provincial Seat under Peter O’Neill’s party – People’s National Congress (PNC), in the 2012 election. On the race with him were Joseph Kopol (independent), Vincent Mirupasi (independent), Silvester Harry Komba (independent) and others. They were contesting for the seat left vacant by Anderson Agiru (current Hela Governor). At the end of the final elimination, Powi was declared winner on 27 July 2012 with a total votes of 139, 308. Before switching code into politics, Powi has been the serving as the Southern Highlands Provincial Administrator for about 10 years. Under his belt as the administrator, he delivered absolutely NOTHING to the province. He only manipulated and controlled all the administrative functions of the provincial government to suit his business and political interest. Development funds were used to pay ghost projects and then diverted into personal account to run election. For i

O'NEILL GOVERNMENT'S THREAT TO FINE OR JAIL SOCIAL MEDIA USERS IS LAUGHABLE

Image
by BRYAN KRAMER On October 15 Post Courier reported "the Government has now come hard on improper users of Information Communication and Technology (ICT) Services and warns that a K20,000 fine or three months jail will apply under section 266 of the NICTA Act." The report stated "NICTA chief Charles Punaha said that the authority will charge or punish anyone who lies, spreads false information or sends any content or communication that the person knows is offensive or of an indecent nature on social media, emails, blogs, forums including Facebook So the question is what would have provoked the NICTA Chief to come out of his slumber and issue such a bold statement? Up until now the most vocal critic of Social Media has been the Prime Minister Peter O'Neil. Well 10 days earlier the Minister of Communications Jimmy Miringtoro announced Mr Punaha re-appointment to the CEO position together with two members to the NICTA Board. Surprising enoug
