THE attempts to kidnap three newly-elected members of parliament in Papua New Guinea are a sign of desperation by People's National Congress leaders. Failed PNC candidate David Arore (pictured) sought to manhandle the new Ijivitari MP at Port Moresby airport this week in an attempt to kidnap him. This came as the National Alliance-Pangu group increased the number of politicians opting to join it to form a coalition government when parliament begins next week. Prime minister Peter O'Neill denied failed PNC MP Arore and other men were acting on behalf of the PNC in the Port Moresby kidnap attempt. But today there were two further incidents of attempted kidnaps by PNC party elements. There was an attempted abduction of new MP elect for South Fly, Seki Asiga, when a West Pacific Airlines aircraft owned by Peter O'Neill arrived in Daru to pick him up. Shortly after I released my public statement, Peter O’Neill’s armed goons attacked my aides at Port Moresby airport and damaged my vehicle. These thugs, including heavily armed Mobile Squad policemen, are the same ones who, with the failed PNC candidate for Oro, tried to kidnap the Ijivitari Member-elect on 27 July. The policemen were supervised by Mr O’Neill’s Deputy Chief of Staff, Oscar Yamuna. I condemn this behaviour in the strongest terms. I advise people to avoid areas such as the airport and hotels where Mr O’Neill’s armed goons are likely to be – there is a very real risk of more extreme violence against peaceful members of the public, including the use of firearms and rogue policemen as occurred in Wabag and Kundiawa. PRESS STATEMENT Former Prime Minister Sir Mekere Morauta today welcomed the decision of the Supreme Court to grant an extension to 2pm on Monday for the return of writs. “The successful application by the Ombudsman Commission provides welcome relief from the election chaos, mismanagement and manipulation orchestrated by Mr Peter O’Neill and the Electoral Commission,” he said. “The extension means many more seats can be declared and writs returned before Parliament sits. “Only 80 writs out of a possible 111 had been returned at the time the Ombudsman Commission made its application for an extension.” As of this morning, there have been a further 18 declarations and counting is continuing in 13 other electorates.
