CRIME HAS ARRIVED AT THE GOVERNMENT’S DOORSTEP

SAM BASIL MP

IF the acting Prime Minister does not know crime has been knocking on the government’s doorstep all along. Now, that fight has come right into his very own family home.
Since the Prime Minister has sacked two other Ministers, it is now proper that he must wield the same wand to the Internal Security Minister. Mark Maipakai has to go. Acting Prime Minister, do you have the guts to sack Minister Mark Maipakai? You must.

It is not a question of hypothesis. We want the acting Prime Minister to wear the shoes of every innocent Papua New Guinean and feel what it is like to lose a close relative to the hands of heinous Papua New Guineans against other Papua New Guineans day in, day out. The acting Prime Minister can now feel the raw nerves of so very ordinary Papua New Guineans whose lives have been turned upside down by crime.
Given that his own son is the subject of police investigations in this gruesome murder, the acting Prime Minister has to offer an honest explanation to the hundreds of foreign investors in this country that their long-term investments are safe, secure and sound.

The hand of God has moved blood over water and bread into stone. Blood is now on Sam Abal’s hands. It should finally dawn on this government that the fight against crime was no myth. Within the same week, a mafia-type Hollywood block-buster movie type broad daylight killing occurred on the Poreporena Freeway, and Tony Wagambie of the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary has no clue whatsoever who the assassins are.

In their own little ways, many hundreds, if not thousands of Papua New Guineans have tried to come to terms with all these bad crimes at the backdrop of a nasty law and order situation that has crisscrossed far too many crossroads, and still the current government is cynical about it. What should it now take for this government to stop being cynical and take the bull by the horns?

People of Papua New Guinea, this government must go after the 2012 elections. Enough is enough. If a murder can occur in the residence of the highest CEO of this land, what guarantee can this government give that we all others below the belt of the highest CEO will not experience similar traumatic experiences?
We all need a good day’s work and a good night’s sleep as guaranteed by our Constitution.

The entire nation is watching…and continues to wait. It is now apparent that the acting Prime Minister is no longer in total control. The law and order symptoms clearly reflect the dire situations that this government has failed to arrest in the last decade.

This is the reason why the Opposition has being calling time and time again for the “acting” business of providing prime ministership in this country to be time-bound, and for the “acting” Prime Minister to invoke S.142(5)(c) without further delay.

This is the reason why the Opposition has being calling time and time again for leadership to be aptly and eminently displayed by this government. That call has been falling on deaf ears. The acting Prime Minister is either refusing to listen, does not what to do so, or is simply scared of making the bold decisions.
I am now calling on the people of this country to rise with the Opposition and to demand change NOW. Let us speak at the ballot box clearly and honestly that this government must be relegated to the history books once and for all. A one-way consignment note, with ‘Fast delivery’ and ‘Fragile’ stickers must be fastened to the baggage tag of this government so that it arrives safely to its restful ‘destination’. The Falcon jet, with its pilots and crew are ready. All that this government has to do is board that plane NOW.
