PM SEEKS AUSSIE VISA OVERHAUL

PNG's prime minister says Australia's visa system is unfair and is driving PNG's citizens to choose Asia for business and education opportunities.
Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister, Peter O'Neill, says Australia's visa system is unfair and is driving PNG's citizens to choose Asia over Australia when looking for business, education and other opportunities.

Australia eased its onerous visa process for Papua New Guineans in March.

But Mr O'Neill has told Radio Australia's Pacific Beat many of the questions asked are still unnecessary.

"I think it is grossly unfair that our citizens are being subjected to such scrutiny that it's unwarranted," he said.

Mr O'Neill says Australia is missing out on business and other travellers.
"We are seeing an increasing number of Papua New Guineans going towards Asia more than going towards Australia for such treatments in medical, even education."

Mr O'Neill has urged the Australian Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, to give his citizens the same access offered to New Zealanders.

His comments come in the lead up to Ms Gillard's visit to PNG next week.

Meanwhile, Australia's Foreign Minister Bob Carr arrives in Papua New Guinea on Friday for a two-day visit.

It is Senator Carr's second trip to the Pacific nation as Australia's top diplomat.

He will meet his PNG counterpart, the Minister for Planning, and other senior members of the PNG Government to discuss a range of issues including trade and investment, development and people smuggling.

Senator Carr will also address a fundraising dinner for mothers and babies.

He says Australia has done a great deal to help improve healthcare in PNG, but further progress is needed.

"Given that a woman in PNG is 80 times more likely to die in childbirth than in Australia, there's every reason why this activity ought to be stepped up." Senator Carr said.

"We've got to make further progress. The figures for PNG are of great concern, that's why we're providing 1,400 in-country scholarships for training new midwives and nurses and community health workers by 2015."
