KEEP THE FIRE BURNING, PNG!

PNG BLOGS

There is no retreat, there is no surrender. Never! We are moving forward, despite all odds, we cannot lose - not when the very spirit that defines PNG is at stake. Not when our constitutional rights to the freedom of speech, movement and assembly has been threatened!

If God is with us who can be against us? It is time to collectively get up, rise up, stand up and speak up for PNG against corruption.

We fought for positive change to come and the change came on November 18th, 2013 when we collectively said 'No to corruption and Yes to PNG', but not without sacrifices.

All of us who played our part and will continue to play our part all sacrificed and will continue to sacrifice in order to fight against corruption. We will stand up for constitutional rights, media freedom and democracy in PNG - regardless of the political divide and where our political preference or loyalties may lie. Regardless of deliberate political interference and negative, unconstructive, unhelpful critics we fought on and will continue to fight on until we win the battle against corruption.

People who have participated, in one way or another so far, are true patriots who all helped create history - who all helped create change because change was desperately needed. Everybody who participated by taking positive action, helping to spread the message, everybody who thought positive or did something positive helped create that change.

Pitau Karup will go down in the history books as a true champion who made a huge sacrifice for PNG by helping to create change - to help turn the tide against the onslaught of corruption that was choking PNG. Pitau, whose full name is Morris Karup Pitau - a seafarer by trade and a master (captain) from Ali Island, Aitape, Sandaun Province - was working with P&O Maritime (PNG) Ltd, when he responded to our collective call for change by participating in our social media 'stop work stay at home protest'.

Pitau, the Captain of a 88meter mini-bulk carrier/copper feeder vessel MV Western Zenith chartered to Ok Tedi Mining Limited - shipping copper concentrate out of Kiunga to Port Moresby for overseas, and his all Papua New Guinean crew and officers being; Bruno Wulali (chief officer); Michael Sione (2nd officer); Stanis Sengle (chief engineer); Dudu Mopi (2nd engineer), Sayed Abel (3rd engineer), motorman (1), ratings (5), cadets (2), chef (1) all participated in the stop work 'stay at home protest' in Kiunga on the Monday November 18, 2013.

The Captains and crew of two other ships MV Fly Alliance and MV Goada Chief also stopped work.

Captain Pitau advised: "All the crews on both ships agreed it's about time we must stand up with other working comrades across the nation for a cause. While working with private foreign companies we knew our job was on the line in this stopwork action as our action in fact will not affect the government of PNG but the direct effect will be on the companies we worked for in off-hiring of the vessels by the charterer etc. Though we have that knowledge of the effect on the companies by our action, we strongly believe we are Papua New Guineans and Patriots not by word of mouth but by our actions regardless of our situations and the consequences of our actions. We shutdown all communications throughout the day during the stopwork showdown."

It was on Tuesday 19 Nov 2013, when Pitau learned of his termination, collected his ticket and flew out of Kiunga.

Pitau described the company he worked for as 'one of the best in terms of crews working terms and conditions compared to other shipping companies'.

"In organizing and leading this stopwork which the company is directly affected is also very painful to me as its just like biting a hand that very much cares for you. It is a matter of my bread & butter and my carrier as a seafarer or my country", Pitau said.

However getting his 'marching orders' did not shock nor deter Pitau, who said: "I WILL STAND WITH THE TEAM IN THIS FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION IN OUR COUNTRY TO THE END."

"I'm at home now but urge ALL WORKING CLASS CITIZENS IN PORT MORESBY WHO SUPPORTED THIS FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION TO TAKE HEED OF THIS CALL AND BE PRESENT AT THE JACK PIDIK PARK MONDAY 25 NOVEMBER 2013. WE MUST MASTER OURSELVES STAND FOR SOMETHING & NOT SIT BACK AND FALL FOR ANYTHING. PM PO MUST GO AT ALL COST & BY ALL MEANS."

Our collective sacrifice, so far, for PNG will not be in vain and never disregarded nor regretted. We are proceeding to stand up for our rights to meet and speak in public at Jack Pidik Park, today. We will not be cowered and nor we will be coerced.

Kirap olgeta true leaders, champions, patriots, prayer warriors and all right thinking people it is time to collectively contribute positively for PNG. Don't wait for anybody to ask you to do it, just do it.

We are prepared to go to prison in our battle against corruption because we are not going to allow PNG to be consumed by corruption without a fight - without first standing up for what is right, peacefully.

The latest is that a public anti-corruption meeting - which has been called for today - starting at 12 pm at Jack Pidik Park will be attended by the Opposition Leader Hon Belden Namah who, as of late last night, in response to certain comments made by the Prime Minister Peter O'Neill and published in the Sunday Chronicle article (see PNG NEWS), issued a public challenge to Prime Minister Peter O'Neill to turn up to Jack Pidik Park, today at 12 pm, to debate the issues raised.

Please make your way there peacefully with positive thoughts and good intentions - ready and willing to contribute to the cause.

Please also take into consideration that the core team has not received any outside funding to come this far so far, and therefore all or any assistance will be appreciated to help keep the fire burning.

So, keep the fire burning PNG!

As per anti-corruption activist core team member and social media admin, John Endomongo Kua: "The fire is not going to die until justice is done."
