NAMAH WANTS TRANSPARENCY

“Until there is a LEGISLATION that controls the Media, there is freedom of Expression and freedom of speech. Every reporter must exercise their right of carrying out Investigative Journalism”,

These were the words spoken by the Leader of the Opposition and Open Member for Vanimo Green Electorate, Hon. Belden Namah, in a Press Conference held today.

The Opposition Leader held the Press Conference this afternoon to express his disappointment at the way the media seems to be controlled, with more emphasis on how any news or Press Conference matters from the Opposition is being scrutinized and delayed broadcast or not at all.

A recent example being yesterdays news run with the failure of both local Television Stations EMTV and KunduTv, in playing yesterdays Press Conference in which Mr. Namah displayed and addressed Warrants of Arrest and Court Orders for the Arrest of the Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill, Treasurer Don Polye and Finance Minister James Marape.

In a phone call to the Opposition Leader, a crew from KunduTv gave the explanation that they were contacted by Mr. Daniel Korimbao from the Prime Minister’s Office and advised that the Court Orders and Warrants of Arrest were defective.

Mr. Namah then gathered that the same advice must have been relayed to EMTV thus their failure to broadcast the Press Conference yesterday in which actual copies of the signed and stamped Warrants of Arrest and Court Orders were presented. Copies were also handed out to Media Personnel present.

Despite that mishap, the Opposition Leader warmly thanked Post Courier and the Radio Stations for publishing and airing his Press Conference yesterday and replayed today. He reminded them that they were doing their country proud,

“It is not my fight or (referring to lawyer representing Opposition) Mr. Alois Jerewai’s fight, we are fighting for the future of our country against this CHRONIC DISEASE AND CANCER OF CORRUPTION.”

“This matter is of National interest and for the National Security of this Nation because the Prime Minister and his two Ministers, who were involved in this fraud payment of K71.8 million, control the Heart beat and Bloodline of this country while they hold the office of Treasury and Finance Minister respectively”, said Mr. Namah.

Mr. Namah then reiterated his call on the Prime Minister, Treasurer and the Finance Minister to resign with immediate effect considering Warrants from a competent court were out for their arrest.

With that effect, they should voluntarily surrender to Police because they have no choice like any other citizen of this country. They subjected officers under them to the law for investigion who were bureaucrats in their office; Steven Gibson and Jacob Yafai; these officers were subjected to the process of the law with their position stripped off them when they went under investigation.

“As Politicians we must display integrity, accountability and transparency due to the trust vested in us by our voters”.

Mr. Namah also repeated his call on the Prime Minister to relinquish the Police Ministry as the failure of the Police Commissioner and the Police to arrest and charge the PM and the two ministers are clear indication of Political interference.

The Opposition Leader further expressed his disagreement on the Police Ministry being retained by re-elected member for Madang, Nixon Duban, as he is still facing bribery and corruption charges dated from the 2012 elections and also assault charges against a pilot during the Alotau Accord.

“As leaders, take the lead and allow for rule of Law and Justice to take its Natural Cause”.

Mr. Namah further stressed that any issue the Prime Minister or the two ministers may have with the case, these issues should be submitted to the Court and not turn to using the executive arm of government to suppress or evade the process of Justice.

This follows the update today from the Waigani Committal Court where an application by lawyers representing the Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill, Treasurer Don Polye and Finance Minister James Marape was granted a temporary stay order by Magistrate Lawrence Kangwia on the Arrest Warrants issued for their arrest last year.

The Court Order issued by Grade 5 Magistrate Cosmos Bidar was very clear and any interference by the Police Commissioner, the Police and any other person will be seen as Contempt of Court.

With that the lawyer representing the Opposition, Mr. Alois Jerewai, stated that when a order has been issued in a court by a magistrate, there should not be any comments or attempts to go against the orders by any inappropriate person, there must be respect for Law and Justice, under the Constitution which is the law of our land.

Therefore until the Warrant of Arrest is ruled or set aside by the magistrate who issued the said orders, the Police must carry out their duties as demanded of them under Section 197 of the Constitution; FUNCTIONS OF THE POLICE FORCE.

On that note the Opposition Leader also called on Justice Minister, Kerenga Kua to uphold the law of the land and stand down as Principal Legal Advisor until investigations are completed regarding the National Front page assault allegations levelled against him.

Mr. Namah stated that his call to the leaders to stand down from office is so that Public do not get the perception that leaders will hold onto office and influence decision making process.

“PUBLIC INTEGRITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY is demanded of leaders at all levels, but especially from the most senior Political ones”.
