Gigira Laitebo Gas to Power Hela – Dream Finally Becomes A Reality

HELA province will soon have a full-time electricity supply following an agreement between PNG Power Ltd and Barrick Gold Corporation.
PPL chairman Larry Andagali and Barrick PNG/Australia Executive General Manager Greg Walker resolved at a special meeting this week for the Porgera gold miner to supply 4 megawatts of electricity to PPL to reticulate to the people of Hela.
Andagali said despite the people of Hela have been living in darkness for the past 23 years despite the commissioning of the Hides Gas to Electricity project in November 1991.
“I am so pleased that I am in a position to finally make the Hela people’s dream a reality by having access to 24 hours electricity powered from their very own prophetic Gigira Laitebo gas,” he said.
He added that it was not a mistake that Barrick had waited for many years to make available 4 megawatt of power.
“It is only fulfilling the Gigira Laitebo prophecy,” Andagali said.
He said according to the prophecy, the Gigira Laitepo (burning wooden torch) would:
  1. Light up Gumba Bara – Hela Obene (Porgera Gold Mine).
  2. then it will then light up the land of many coloured man ( white, black, brown, yellow) – PNG LNG Project
  3. then it will light up the middle land (could be defined as the land close to the source – Hides Gas Field, Tari) or it could be defined as central land – (Central Province / Port Moresby) or it could be defined as the centre of PNG (Tari to Lae).
  4. The fourth and final prophecy talks about turbulence, lawlessness and end of Hela culture/society.
“I represented Hides landowners and signed the first (PDL1) petroleum development license agreement to generate Power using Gigira Gas to mine Porgera Gold Mine which paved the way for the first Prophecy to be fulfilled,” Andagali said.
“I also represented Hides PDL 1 landowners to conclude the UBSA agreement at Kokopo and LBBSA at Hides in 2010 which pave the way for fulfilment of second prophecy. Gigira Laitebo will certainly light up the land of many coloured man.
“When I was appointed the chairman of PPL, I knew that I will be able to fulfil the third prophecy.
“In order for this to happen, PPL and National Petroleum Company PNG (NPCP) joined forces to negotiate with ExxonMobil to develop 150 MW gas powered generation for Port Moresby. We are in advanced stages of negotiations with ExxonMobil on the gas price etc.
“Barrick’s agreement to supply 4 MW power will light Hela and access power will be fed into the Ramu Grid.
“Definitely not a coincidence, everything that happened is by design. The forth Prophecy shows the current Hela with total lawlessness. The Hela society is at the verge of total collapse, tribal fights are more frequent using high powered guns, there is law but no order in the communities, ineffective and inefficient public service with no proper houses, offices to operate from and not resources to deliver services. The customs and cultures and Hela kingdom is slowly winding down and so the end is approaching fast. So what do we need to do?”
Andagali thanked Finance Minister and Tari MP James Marape for “proactively helping our technical team to fast-track this project” as the local member.
He urged Hela Governor Anderson Agiru to use the province’s development funds to reticulate the power supply to Margarima, Komo and Koroba districts.
