PNG GET REAL: NOBODY IS SAVING PNG AT THIS JUNCTURE

by NOAH ARIKU
PM Peter O'Neill has serious allegations against him and it is for the Court of Law to judge him. This issue can be settled within the next few months or couple of years.
There is something of greater national importance and negative impacts on the next generation that I want to share here. This issue takes around 30 years to settle.
We will be leaving ourselves open to further exploitation, for the next 30 years, if we dedicate all our time to discuss the "failures" of PM Peter O'Neill.
People are saying we must remove PM Peter O'Neill to rescue PNG.
Well and good but be aware that the replacement will either cunningly or stupidly justify the continued raping of our natural resources by Transnational Corporations under the guise of increased foreign investor confidence and a pressing need for foreign reserves to grow our (foreign) export industry.
The strategy is so simple that we easily miss it whilst character assassinating each other.
The strategy can be portrayed in a 5 phase cycle as such:
1. Get the public and university students to cry wolf when the Kina and foreign reserves go on a downward spiral due to market forces.
2. Accuse the Government of corruption and rally people power to circumvent judicial processes.
3. Change the Government and support the incoming Government to secure loans from donor agencies and foreign nations.
4. Fast track foreign investments in mining, petroleum, gas for export to raise foreign exchange and capital for loan repayments. This will convince donor agencies of our capacity to repay the loans.
5. Maintain surveillance and repeat step 1 if the Government threatens foreign investments.
It's an economic development model that ensures that foreign investors always reap maximum profits whilst our nation makes barely enough to repay the loans and maintain public services with no space to fully develop other resources in the likes of our human capital and our customary land.
It's an economic development model that ensures that we will always be beggars on our own land at the mercy of foreign investors.
The foreign investors are the ones being saved here, not PNG!!!!
Is not foreign investment the favorite term for all incoming Governments?
Has an incoming Government in the last 40 years placed local human capital investment as the critical enabler for economic growth?
Count how many times the incoming Prime Minister will say the words "Foreign Investments" and "Foreign Investors" in his maiden address to the nation, if PM Peter O'Neill is removed.
Are we really saving PNG or are we creating an excellent environment and justification for more foreign investment at the expense of our natural resources, our untapped human capital and land through new debts that will be repaid by our children and our grandchildren over the next 30 years???
So should we remove PM Peter O'Neill or keep him?
That's for you to decide but do consider our next 30 years as well.
