DO OUR LEADERS DESERVE US? OR DO WE DESERVE THEM?

Image
by PAUL AMATIO One of the greatest fears I have is whether my country is still MY country? Now why would someone like me, a 100% PNGean born and bred and as brown as can be think that? I wrote this piece using the backdrop of international politics and events as a possible picture of what can be happening in my country. While I am no expert in international politics, I am trained in information collation and analysis and evaluation and I have some experience in being able to put together information for evaluation purposes. I may not be 100% accurate but I believe I am not totally wrong. My sources of information are open and easily accessible to anyone who can read from the news media, web sites, history and current affairs. If one looks at recent history the new economic powers of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and the ASEAN nations, these nations have followed the path of development taken by Western Countries. They had a moderate economy that was heavily dependent and rel

PNG’s democracy gazes creepy: Laws are bend, broken and institutions are scapegoated with adverse force.

by PETER S. KINJAP Since independence from 1975, Papua New Guinea has enjoyed a vibrant democracy and the rule of law was at its helm with due respect and law breakers were dealt with accordingly. Six years ago things begin to change, taking a toll to all new level with corruption wide spreading in every government offices. When the country was about to embrace the benefits of the largest LNG project in the Pacific, a forcefully taken government was formed with Peter O’Neill at the rudder. Literally, Peter O’Neill was forced into the office of the Prime Minister – an issue which the courts find no jurisdiction to intervene. It was a number game and so be it – O’Neill with the numbers took by storm. This ‘invasion’ mounted a psychological effect in the minds of Peter O’Neill which was witnessed through his unpreceded and unbecoming behavior of a person to occupy the higher in the country with integrity, moral ethics and sensitivity to the rule of law. The country was shocked with

SELECTING LEADERS IN NGE 2017

Image
A series of Articles by Sam Koim Article I: Introductory I will be publishing a series of articles as part of my contribution towards educating the public to elect reasonably qualified people to the National Parliament in this National General Elections (NGE). Every citizen has two constitutional rights under section 50 of the Constitution to determine the leadership of our country every 5 years: (1) Right to Vote and (2) Right to stand for public office. If you are dissatisfied with the status quo in your electorate, province or country, you have these two powers to invoke during this period. We all may not be in strategic governmental positions to dictate the development of this country, but we all are given the right and the opportunity to stand for public office and elect those who will be in those strategic positions by exercising our voting franchise. Whilst a minority of the population will be raising their hands up as candidates for the 111 seats in Parliament, the en

2017 ELECTION IS THE MOST CRUCIAL FOR PNG CONSIDER THIS AND DECIDE

by MEAGHER TAYLOR This coming 2017, National General Election is most significant and crucial for the nation P apua New Guinea, and for every provinces, including my beloved Gulf Province with its current LNG issues. We have witnessed well over 5 years of turbulence, instabilities, corruptions, and undue manipulations of individuals, and reputable organisations, by current government of Peter O’Steal. The extent of the damages done by this grand coalition government to methodically destabilised the legal functions, rule of laws, procedures, processes and control structures is beyond comprehension. PNC and the ruling alliance has destroyed the independence and trust of custodian institutions designed to uphold the constitution, safe guard, and protect the nation. These acts of control by egotistic avaricious Prime Minister and his cohorts are mere deeds of criminalities to avoid incarceration. The principles and visions on which this nation was built upon by our fore-father ma

A DESPERATE TURNBULL STANDS BY A WEAK DESPOT

Image
by PETER J RICKETS April is proving to be the most disastrous month in the history of Australia’s relationship with Papua New Guinea, with yet another crisis in Malcolm Turnbull’s concentration camp on Manus Island, to the north of the PNG mainland. At a time when the West is struggling to win the hearts and minds of Papua New Guinea in the face of a concerted Chinese diplomatic effort to do the same, Manus has once again blown up in Australia’s face. This week’s riot during which PNG Defence Force personnel fired approximately 100 rounds from military weapons into the refugee compound has created even more animosity towards Turnbull’s Australia. The compound is supposed to be officially closed, but still houses hundreds of refugees, with Turnbull and his Immigration Minister washing their hands of any responsibility for it and its occupants. Infuriated by the continuing Turnbull-Dutton deceptions and their attempts to slither away from Australia’s responsibilities, Papua New Gui

Desperate PM looking for cash by selling Ok Tedi, Star Mountains Plaza and Apec Haus to foreigners

Image
Former Prime Minister Sir Mekere Morauta said reported attempts by the Prime Minister to secretly sell valuable public assets to foreign interests, if true, are a sign of his desperation for cash to save his sinking ship. “Ad hoc decision-making like this, not as part of a comprehensive package of rescue measures, will make the nation’s problems worse and reduce the options for properly considered reconstruction in the future.” “We are virtually in the caretaker government period, at which point no significant decisions should be made, especially decisions that rob shareholders and landowners of their rights and the general public of their assets.” Sir Mekere said he had been given reliable information on three asset sales that are allegedly being negotiated behind closed doors – of the State’s 67% share in Ok Tedi Mining Ltd, the State’s 20% share in the Star Mountains Plaza hotel and 100% of APEC Haus. These sales involve very valuable assets, and the risk of selling them
