Marat was humiliated PM demanded resignation and humiliated people of Rabaul: Ex-AG

The National - 10th May 2010

FORMER justice minister and attorney-general Dr Allan Marat claimed last Friday that Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare has humiliated the people of his Rabaul electorate and himself in angrily demanding his resignation in front of other ministers and the government caucus. So saying, Marat has also withdrawn his Melanesian Liberal Party from the government coalition. In a statement, Marat said: “I am not crying over spilt milk. But I must set the record straight that I was not politely asked to step down. “I was not merely asked to resign. The prime minister, whilst in a very angry mood, demanded my resignation and humiliated the people of Rabaul Open Electorate in me as their representative.” Marat said he had told the government caucus meeting last Tuesday that the Post-Courier had misreported him about the Maladina amendments in its front page report titled “Maladina is Lying: Marat”. “I explained the misreporting to Esa’ala MP Moses Maladina just before the caucus meeting, and again to the caucus just before Parliament convened. “I also told the caucus that I would make an apology about the misreporting in Parliament.

“This was not to be.
“As soon as the caucus meeting started, Sir Michael stepped in and ordered me to leave the meeting and out of the Justice portfolio,” he said. Marat’s letter of resignation to the prime minister gives a vivid account of the government caucus meeting and how he said he had been embarrassed before the entire government caucus members. Marat’s letter also described Sir Michael’s behaviour in dismissing him as a “tirade of cursing me and the opposition leader. “I said not one word against your tirade simply because you were humiliating the people of Rabaul in front of other (government) ministers and backbenchers. “I slowly stood up, gave a gentle bow to you (prime minister), and quietly walked out slowly, opened the door slowly and closed it behind me slowly. “You were clearly very angry with me. I expected you to ask to see me privately in your office and then sack me. This did not happen and so I do not know the real reason for your demand for my resignation … “I have a lot of respect for you as prime minister but it is your minders who give you advice on which you acted or do not act that landed you in awkward situations … “I respect your discretion and the circumstances in which you chose to humiliate the people of Rabaul district and decommission me ...” Marat’s letter to the PM stated. In last Friday’s statement, Marat said: “On the issue of the prime minister’s explanation for sacking me, I offer the following:

Disagreements with a group (or haus lain) can be resolved. But if the motive of the majority in the group behind the matter discussed in the haus lain is different from justice and righteousness, disagreements will always remain disagreements within a superficial ‘solidarity’.
“The question then becomes: what is important; justice and righteousness in governance or ‘solidarity’ of the group?” Marat further explained that if the motive of the majority in the group for a particular amendment was to legalise previous wrongful conduct of any member of that majority group, justice and righteousness would demand that that particular amendment was not pursued. The sacked minister said: “The recently passed amendments to the Constitution, enabling amendments to the Organic Law on the duties and responsibilities of leadership (leadership code) seek to legitimise misconduct in office charges and glaring instances of misconduct that are yet to be investigated and charges laid.

“I ask in these instances: is justice and righteousness in the existing law and, therefore, governance more important than ‘solidarity’ of the group to weaken the law and, therefore, the existing rule of law, so that misconduct charges cannot be laid or prosecuted? “I believe in the former.” The second letter to the prime minister was handed over by Melanesian Liberal Party secretary Andrew Sapuko which informed Sir Michael “the MLP’s resignation from the government in compliance with your humiliating sacking of its parliamentary leader”.

  1. jason tan was the largest commercial threat to garamut trading & boroko foodworld family-jim tjoeng & daniel tjoeng.both the TST (tan family aka barry etc) & BOROKO FOODWORLD have been violently oppossed since the 1980's with militant skirmishes constantly culminating in this attempted assination.no doubt jason tan will issue 'contracts' on the infamous tjoeng brothers using taiwanese instead of hong kong triads.
the events that have forced the issue is the hold that both daniel & jim have over the current government ministers in the kitchen cabinet-pruatich & arthur somare and constantly getting lucrative government licences with going to open tender.the tans (like every other oz & png business feel left out) realize with the impending issue of a casino license to daniel tjoeng, its million kina profits will allow the tjoengs to finally dominate the illegal, duty free, bypass customs supermarket trade.note that rimbunan hijau has also entered the food sector and the conflict here has yet to be played out with the malaysian triads.port moresby is heading for gangland warfare that even police cannot see coming and will make the melbourne underbelly look like sesame street.
jim tjoeng recieved a knighthood for free.didnt serve on any govt board, even for just 5 years before the PM gave it to him.all png business people know it.jason missed out.daniel tjoeng controls the national gaming control board & uses a 4th licence (which the board illegally issued to itself! the board being the regulator) and then daniel with arthurs help gets to use the license free.no public tender.jim tjoeng who we all know was a trade store owner cum chairman of air nuigini without ever having completed tertiary studies.he failed grade 12.
corruption in png is highlighted by the tjoeng & tan traid conflicts.it touches on the issue of masses of asian businessmen entering png, many illegally.they then set up business and grow on the back of poltical patronage oiled by corrupt deals with law enforcement agencies powerless to intervene because many themselves have ben compromised with cash handouts from..you guessed it! it then starts all over again.we need help from the australian federal police.bart & mekere are simply too weak and scared for their own families safety.balme them?
