No Crook in our Midst - Sulliman brushes aside claims

SOUTH PACIFIC POST

The Auditor General George Wasi Sullimann, whose term in office expires on Monday (Feb 14), has scoffed at serious allegations of misconduct in office against him.
Mr Sullimann served five years in office, the normal term of an Auditor- General. He said it had become a norm for persons within the organisation to come out and discredit the incumbent head, whose term was about to expire so that he/she was not reappointed.

He said such behaviour is being perpetrated by those aspiring to take over the top post and as such, he did not wish to waste his precious time commenting on baseless allegations made against him and his wife.

Mr Sullimann said the appointment of the AG is a prerogative of the Government and that he will exit a satisfied man having brought many changes into the department unlike his predecessors. “I have worked in this office for 38 years, six of these years as the AG and the terms and conditions enjoyed by employees here is extremely higher than in the other public service organisations,” Mr Sullimann said.

The allegation raises serious issues pinpointing specific instances of alleged misconduct and abuse of due process by Mr Sullimann. The Ombudsman Commission also confirmed receiving these complaints against Mr Sullimann but could not elaborate.

Similar complaints were also lodged with the Prime Minister’s Office, the Secretary of Department of Personnel Management, National Executive Council and other relevant Government agencies.
The allegations include double dipping, appointments and breach of general orders, mal-administration, unfair and malicious treatment against his staff.

They also alleged that there was a misapplication of some K3.8 million earmarked for projects to other areas and that his wife had allegedly been abusive towards staff.
The allegation signed by current and former staff members also called for an investigation into the use of an official car Reg number BCS 420, which was used in an armed robbery at around September in 2009 at the Gordon Industrial area.

They alleged that the vehicle’s initial registraion number was BCH 757, but was later changed to BCS 420 after the robbery.
