Please spread these social media articles more widely
Corruption grows in PNG because not enough Papua New Guineans actually know what’s going on. Our newspapers won’t print controversial stories because they don’t want to be taken to court by obsolete defamation laws that protect the guilty as much as the innocent. On top of that we have poor penetration into our population of any form of news media. Only about 15% of our population lives in urban areas! Literacy rates are still appalling.
It’s easy to ignore all this whenever we’re on social media and see lots of comments posted to a PNG Blogs article or hundreds of ‘likes’. But only a small percentage of our population has money enough to access social media regularly enough to read the articles about corruption. Social media is NOT educating enough PNGans to create the pressure necessary for reform and not enough pressure to frighten the corrupt and thats a fact.
YOU can help change all this. Personally commit yourself to do better at spreading the best social media stories about corruption so more people can become aware of whats happening.
--EMAIL to your friends the links to articles you like.
--Better than that, COPY AND PASTE full articles onto your email. More people receiving those kinds of emails will read the article and spread the story even more.
Even doing all that, soft copies alone will never ever reach many PNGans. Thus---
-- We must print out more hard copies of social media articles.
-- Post the stories in the workplace, pass them to friends who don’t access internet, post them on public notice boards so others can read. This is very very effective, but also requires effort. Will you make that effort?
If we don’t start spreading corruption stories more widely, social media will end up doing little good, the corrupt will feel confident to keep stealing and PNG will be screwed. A screwed up country affects your life as well as everyones. Let that be YOUR motivation to make a greater effort to GET OUT THE WORD more widely.
